Yes, one that has a humbucker, the HSS model, and get him an amp that has effects built in. When starting out it has to be an enjoyable activity, taking lessons, learning to read music isn't always enjoyable, but, if he can play some chords and sound like his favorite band, that will keep him interested. I'm speaking from my own experience at that age, my guitar was playable but I didn't have any effects pedals so the sound was bland, and I lost interest. Now at 57 I have decent guitars and effects which gets me close to my idols sound, Eddie Van Halen, while I can't play like him, getting close keeps it enjoyable and motivates me to keep going, I only wish I was this motivated at 14. Best of luck!
If you don't mind spending the money, these are fine. But, a Squier would also be fine for half the cost.
Have bought several guitars from Adorama and had good experiences. Most recently I bought a Lake Placid Blue Fender Player Strat that plays and sounds amazing

As I stare over at a player telecaster I paid $850 for and is just past the 30 day return window. Frown

Oh and before someone asks, Mexico. Big Grin

This is a great deal! I got a player series strat last year for 700, which was a decent price.

The player series are really great guitars! I do not have experience with purchasing guitars from Adorama tho so can't speak to that.

Each fender telecaster (2) I have received has had a hairline crack in the body where the fretboard comes into the body. Anyone else had that issue?

Edited to add: Both have been from adorama

That's pretty much the first place cracks happen. But on a brand new guitar I'd be calling Adorama and exchanging.
