Yes, one that has a humbucker, the HSS model, and get him an amp that has effects built in. When starting out it has to be an enjoyable activity, taking lessons, learning to read music isn't always enjoyable, but, if he can play some chords and sound like his favorite band, that will keep him interested. I'm speaking from my own experience at that age, my guitar was playable but I didn't have any effects pedals so the sound was bland, and I lost interest. Now at 57 I have decent guitars and effects which gets me close to my idols sound, Eddie Van Halen, while I can't play like him, getting close keeps it enjoyable and motivates me to keep going, I only wish I was this motivated at 14. Best of luck!

If you don't mind spending the money, these are fine. But, a Squier would also be fine for half the cost.

Have bought several guitars from Adorama and had good experiences. Most recently I bought a Lake Placid Blue Fender Player Strat that plays and sounds amazing

Removed post due to issues experienced with upper frets being uneven.
