Keep the 6100. I've used all levels of Sonicare Toothbrushes and the 6100 is the sweet spot. Though the 4100 is effective at cleaning, its vibration insulation is horrible. It's loud and vibrates way too much through the hands. The 6100 is not only more effective, albeit not drastically, it's more importantly quieter and more comfortable in hand.

Yeah, I'm a dentist and I agree with your dentist. It's oscillating as opposed to vibration with sonicare.

Replying to both of you. I don't have any research offhand that says one is better than the other, so take it with a grain of salt. It's just my professional opinion, which may differ from other professional opinions. I don't think the vibrating is bad per se, but the oscilating is more of a movement overall and so probably clears away more plaque with less manual movement. I don't think the vibrating alone without manual movement will clear away much plaque. There's a reason the hygienists' instruments (prophy cup) spin, not vibrate. If you had a vibrating mop and an oscillating mop, which do you think would leave your floor more clean? Kinda the same idea

Been using Oral-B with Costco replacement heads. I'll give this a try to see how they compare. Heard good things about Philips

This 4100 model - ProtecticeClean - has been discontinued
The new 4100 'Series" is the replacement
The replacement has USB charger (can be plugged into adapter like comes with a phone).
There are reports the battery is smaller and weaker

I bought the 5100 about a month ago it's a great brush but had to replace it already because the motor broke. Im using the replacement now. Hopefully it was just a fluke but time will tell.

Great Customer service:
I had the older version 4100 from Amazon at about this price. I got it about 2 years ago and it stopped recharging. I checked their website for 24 months warranty. Online I could not get a replacement as they don't have the older version (non-USB). I called the toll-free number and they sent me this new version as a replacement (they even included the wall plug).

I feel this version is better than the older 4100.
You can't go wrong with this price.

random health note but when you use this don't apply it to your gums. I used to not care and just apply it straight on, even angling it up towards my gums. And over the years, my gums receded to the point that my dentist said I need to be super careful not to brush my gums - otherwise root canal or something.

That may be why Oral-B is preferred by some dentists maybe - with the round head making it easier to only hit your teeth vs the long action of the Sonicare. I dunno I'm not a dentist.

Anyway just be careful with your gums and stay healthy.

My dentist said I push too hard when I brush. Said to get electric with a sensor. For $30 worth a try.

Thanks. I purchased it as a spare for the long lasting Li-ion battery. The first one is already 4 yrs old and still going strong. I assume that this 4100 is the original stronger version without USB. I use the 4100 for gum care with Philips Genuine G2 Optimal Gum Care and the C2 heads. This is in addition to using an oral B round head model.

Damn, just bought a pack of two for $70 or $80 from Costco the other day. But it's the 6100 version.

The costco is the discontinued 4500 not the 6100
