Buy a paperwhite, use it until BF, the send them for trade in towards buying newer kindles with BF prices. you will get atleast $20 and a 20 percent off coupon towards purchase of newer kindle then. essentially money makers.

2017 hd10 is almost completely unusable, it's slow has almost no memory and you and anyone you give it to (like your kids) will end up so frustrated with it that you'll daydream about ways to elaborately destroy it

Interested in a simple e-reader device for the kid but not fire device. Are these older models decent or just frustrating from a performance standpoint?
I got a 2018 Paperwhite from the last time these went on sale in December and I love it. The simple lightweight e-reader I was looking for. I had a resolution to read more and I'm on my 6th book so far this year. Pair this with an app like Libby and you can borrow ebooks from your local library.

The newer model has only a couple of features that are better (like USB-C, more LEDs for supposedly more even lighting and a lighting color temp setting for said lighting) but for less that half the price I feel this more than makes up for their absence.

Why is the 7th gen 8" model more expensive that the 8th gen?

Here's what you can do: Get one and download a bunch of your child's favorite shows off of YouTube and put them on the tablet. Or install Netflix and use the offline mode to store shows.

For $25, even if it just keeps a door propped open, it's worth it.

Same. Ive bought a few kindles this way. All have been great and still going - but different family members have over time taken to them. I wish kindle unlimited did a better job at profiles, it's a little annoying to share but Amazon kids at least helps.

Please DO NOT buy that 2017 HD10. It was slow even before their latest update. You will just have it as e-waste within a month. I traded mine in cracked last month for $20 Smilie. If you want to buy one spend the extra money and get the latest HD10. I do not know why this ends up on, the least the staff at SD can do is say "This product is on sale but we do not prefer you to buy it" but then again they won't get their referral commissions.

Some people buy these so they can get the trade in credit plus 20% code to get the new one. Becomes a MM at these prices

I'm going on a flight on Wednesday with my three kids. Can I really not use that HD 10 for them to download movies on?

It's fine for that, the screen is decent to me. A lot of airlines allow you to stream their movies on your device from a browser during the flight so this could be good for that, too

(Speaking from experience with my 2019 version of this tablet, not sure about the 2017 so much)

No my point was that I'm aware that Amazon fires are usually buggy and impossible to use. I have a fire seven already, and it can understand how it's frustrating. Just wanted to ask about the speed on these, unless that doesn't matter once the movies are already on

Get a micro sd card bc that 32 gb won't be much. Easiest way to download movies is on Netflix.
