Buy a paperwhite, use it until BF, the send them for trade in towards buying newer kindles with BF prices. you will get atleast $20 and a 20 percent off coupon towards purchase of newer kindle then. essentially money makers.

2017 hd10 is almost completely unusable, it's slow has almost no memory and you and anyone you give it to (like your kids) will end up so frustrated with it that you'll daydream about ways to elaborately destroy it

Get a micro sd card bc that 32 gb won't be much. Easiest way to download movies is on Netflix.
What is the return policy on route? If I get it by Tuesday and I don't like it I don't wanna be stuck with it

2017 models are slow and battery is cr*p. Save yourself the headache and money and just wait for a sale on a new one

I had an Asus Memo Pad 7 that died on me recently, are any of these equivalent or better?
I just used for surfing web, streaming entertainment on flights.

Returns aren't free on woot, maybe like $5 or $6 fee. This is basically a throw away tablet for $25. It's from 2017 and not an iPad Pro so don't have high expectations and you'll be alright.

Alternatively you can google ways to add the google play store via apk or with Fire Toolbox you can replace the fire tablet os with a standard android one.

I really just hate the FireTablet UI. It's designed to push content/purchases, not be user friendly.

It's awful. And for that reason alone I never recommend it.

Interested in a simple e-reader device for the kid but not fire device. Are these older models decent or just frustrating from a performance standpoint?
Very frustrating. My setup is a tablet above the sink for recipes, music, shows while cooking.

It replaced an ipad air 2, which I wanted to free up for travel because it has LTE (and a free data plan from Tmobile AAL).

The Firetablet is significantly more sluggish for loading apps, webpages, etc. The end result is it just doesn't get use.

Side note, the speakers are very low volume so the exhaust fan on my stove drowns them out (not an issue with the ipad).

My 2017 HD10 had become pretty useless. Worked fine for awhile, but battery pretty much drained over night while turned off.

I've purchased these amazon tablets every couple of years during these fire sales and had the same experiences every time: extremely laggy devices.

And forget about adding storage, disabling useless preloaded apps, installing custom ROMs, or hacks to turn off ads. I tried them all and they either didn't help or were temporary fixes that were removed upon reboot or with software updates.

The limitations are hardware based: slow CPU and small memory that can't keep up with the demands of newer software. They are 5 years old technology after all.

So, my best recommendation is to use them for a singular purpose: as a security camera monitor, a photo gallery viewer, an ebook reader, or a media player.

If you think Amazon tablets will be gaming devices or all of the above, then you will be disappointed.

I have the 2017 and 2019 versions of this tablet. The earlier one came out during a really quickly changing time for tablets, and showed its age the moment that i got it. Even with the fire toolkit mods to clean it up, it's just too slow for modern usage. It's 16x9 aspect ratio is also very awkward to hold in portrait mode, which is the most you'll be using for most reading content.

If you can get the 2019 and up with an earlier firmware, it's competant.all they did in 2021 was add more RAM. At this point though, I just recommend that people get a galaxy tab A series for $100-ish if they want Android, or a used iPad pro (almost any gen).

Lol, for years I've used mine as a fancy alarm clock on the nightstand.

I still love my second generation Paperwhite. It's great for reading books and nothing else, which I love
