Buy a paperwhite, use it until BF, the send them for trade in towards buying newer kindles with BF prices. you will get atleast $20 and a 20 percent off coupon towards purchase of newer kindle then. essentially money makers.

2017 hd10 is almost completely unusable, it's slow has almost no memory and you and anyone you give it to (like your kids) will end up so frustrated with it that you'll daydream about ways to elaborately destroy it

I have the 2017 and 2019 versions of this tablet. The earlier one came out during a really quickly changing time for tablets, and showed its age the moment that i got it. Even with the fire toolkit mods to clean it up, it's just too slow for modern usage. It's 16x9 aspect ratio is also very awkward to hold in portrait mode, which is the most you'll be using for most reading content.

If you can get the 2019 and up with an earlier firmware, it's competant.all they did in 2021 was add more RAM. At this point though, I just recommend that people get a galaxy tab A series for $100-ish if they want Android, or a used iPad pro (almost any gen).
Are you referring to the 2019 fire 7 tablet? TY

Killer deal on the 2019 HD10. I have several of these that I got from woot for $40 and they work great for Netflix/Prime Video. They're also good as a really cheap Echo Show 10 in show mode. They're terrible for browsing. They make a decent NES/Atari/SNES platform with Retroarch.

Put a different way, if you pretended this was a streaming video player at 1080p and wanted nothing more, this is 100% equivalent to any other recent tablet.

Also, the $15 2018 HD8 is a good deal for misc Android stuff. I use one in my Leaf for LeafSpy and just picked up another to use as a home theater remote.

EDIT: Forgot to add: CHECK YOUR BATTERY heavily while you're still under warranty. Like be brutal to it and its charging port. Those are the main points of failure on the woot refurbs.

My 2017 fire won't play a lot of games from the play store anymore.

We have a 10 year old iPad that will no longer update some apps which the kids use. We tried the newest HD8 and it was awful. Way slower than a 10 year old iPad. If you are doing anything other than streaming don't even waste your time. The Amazon App Store has plenty of offerings but it is hit or miss to get the downloads to load on the device.

I'm going on a flight on Wednesday with my three kids. Can I really not use that HD 10 for them to download movies on?
I did the exact thing you're thinking of. It worked wonderfully for watching pre-downloaded movies and series from Netflix. But make sure you add an expansion card. You can get a 128 gb for about $10. You don't need those to be super fast top of the line. I got basic Kingston ones.

Reading these comments, it's clear to see that people aren't aware of the actuality of what you can use these cheap devices for. Install Google play onto it and download VLC media player. Load it with a bunch of movies and tv shows and you've got a cheap portable device to watch a ton. Download a video game emulator for it and pair it with a Bluetooth controller and you've got a cheap portable "Gameboy Color". C'mon people. Think outside of the box!

What are the chances that a Kindle Fire 2017 10" from Woot will come with the stock firmware?

Based on https://forum.xda-developers.com/...ez.3913639, it seems like there's a risk of the firmware being too recent to exploit in order to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, and eventually LineageOS.

These were slow and clunky when they first came out. Probably glorified paper weights at this point, avoid.

These are great for security camera monitoring, music service remotes (like SONOS, etc.).

I keep my HD10 (more current but even 2017 works) next to my PC and have my security camera app on it running 100% of the time. Another one I use to control SONOS.

You can probably find 100's of uses for an HD10 but as a general use tablet, I agree with others -- it's too slow/laggy to use for many apps at a time.

I was going to report the same. I bought the Amazon dock for my HD10 2017 and it sits there showing my security cameras 24/7 (plus responds to Alexa). If I get a phone alert I can pick it up and see everything live without starting an app. The tablet is not speedy, but it's not terrible if you use Fire Toolbox to remove most of the Amazon apps, ads, etc. I can't speak for slowness with newer firmwares, mine has had updates blocked for 2 years.

Most of these are trash. In fact, last time around Amazon refunded my money and requested I donate/dispose off the device as I wished.

Get something else, these Woot! Amazon refurbs aren't worth a dime.

Hey everyone, just wanted to chime in: Yes if you use these older tablets for typical tablet uses then you're probably going to be disappointed. Alternative uses, however, are awesome. They are about the cheapest way to get a device with a touchscreen.

As a software engineer and tinkerer, I have a stack of these and just bought some more. I use them as clocks, weather displays, security monitors, and Home Assistant access panels. Again, not for amateurs, maybe intermediate to advanced technically, but if you are willing to put some time into it, then these Woot sales are amazing.

Search the internet for:
Fire Toolbox
Fully Kiosk
Home Assistant
