If you don't have a instant ink subscription you can't print even if there is ink in your cartridge.
so the printer is unusable unless i have an active instant ink subscription? that sucks!

What a piece of junk. I bought this because my canon quit working and I needed a new one ASAP. The subscription plan makes it feel like someone else is controlling your printer. I go to print one day and the printer is totally shut down.
I will NEVER buy this brand again. Also, it is so noisy, I feel like a stepped back to the 90's. Don't waste your money.

Not quite true. Yes, when the sub ends and you have the "instant ink" cartridges you can't print. But you can buy standard "non-instant ink" cartridges and it will work fine and you won't be limited with those cartridges.

If you use the 9 months free sub you can print so much it will have paid for itself in cartridge refills many times over then just cancel the sub and put regular cartridges in or throw it in the trash.

I've been happy with the HP printer that I've had since 2019 but I'm still on the free plan they used to offer with 15 free pages per month and $1 for every 10 pages. I only use it for color and use my laser for all B&W prints. Probably only spend < $10/yr since I don't need to print color that much.

When signing up tou have 1 to 2 weeks go use the plan promotion or you lose it..
Thanks for this heads up. I'm the type that often waits to start a trial until I'm ready. In this case, the shelf life of the promotion is very limited.

Yea its pretty stupid. Basically as soon as you turn it on and connect it to the internet, the clock to sign up starts.

I think it's more accurate to say you can't print without a subscription even if there is still ink left in their cartridge Smilie

I believe you can still buy a cartridge yourself and use that fine. Just not cartridges that were gotten as part of the subscription.

I thought they did something underhanded and got rid of that plan, even for people from before who thought they had it for life. I recall there was a big stink. Did they finally relent and grandfather existing free ink folks?

Yeah, they backtracked. They sent an email that you can keep the free plan for the lifetime of the printer. I found the email, it was from Dec 2020. So far it still works and actually received replacement cartridges back in Aug 2022.

Pay them 29 so they can suck my money with their constantly running out tiny little cartridges with multiple DRM protection and often lying telling you it is empty after several prints? No thanks.

Not sure if this is still a thing but I believe some models of theirs refuse to scan if ink is not installed or empty.

HP lost me when they started pushing subscriptions. This doesn't need a subscription. Why can't I just buy ink and use it up, and then buy more ink? Then they took base features that used to be free, like wireless printing, and tied that to whether I bought original ink or refills, and then I was gone for good. Bought a canon inkjet all-in-one, plus refilled cartridges on Amazon. I actually like HP printers more. I just don't want to think about yet another subscription. I'm sure canon will find new ways to screw with me, and maybe by the time that happens, I'll find a good color laser all in one to invest in rather than keep playing those games.

Are you saying if I buy the printer or activate the instant ink Feb 1st onwards, it won't give me the 700 free pages a month? What is the extra promo that stacks? I'm happy to explore that. Thanks.
You have to activate a monthly plan by placing a credit card on file when you sign up for the free 9 months of ink. Basically, they charge you the monthly fee on month 10, unless you cancel before they start charging you. The highest available plan is 700 pages a month, which is an available choice but if you forget to change it, they will charge you $24.99 plus tax starting month 10.
The extra free months is a code that you use when you sign up for the instant ink subscription on HP's app/website. It gives you 3 extra months on top of whatever comes with your printer (in this case, 9 months for total of 12 months). You need a person who already has instant ink to give you a code to use, BUT you need to do this by January 31st per the promotion rules. When you use this code, the person who referred you also gets 3 extra months for free, so it should be relatively easy to find someone to give you their code.

Picked one up yesterday. Installed today. Not really understanding the negative comments. This works out to $3.22/month (plus whatever you paid for paper - for many of us that's almost nothing) for up to 700 pages of color printing/month for 9 months. After 9 months donate it or recycle it. That's fantastic. Seriously, what's the downside? Where's there a better deal?
