I have this lens about 15 years ago and bought it on Amazon for the same price. Every photography book recommends getting a 50mm to learn distance, exposure, and composition. The other lens to consider is the EFS 24mm prime lens for usually $130. Higher build quality etc.... 50mm is mainly for close up portraits and 24mm is for landscape. I prefer to use the 24mm for portable travel and has improved my photography as a hobbyist photographer

I'm tempted to buy the 40mm f2.8 pancake lens to keep in the camera, it's smaller and easier to touch away in the car for just Incase Smilie. But I'm not sure how useful 40mm would be
Here's a thorough review of the 24, 50 and 40mm lenses. Kind of like Project Farm, but I'd almost say more thorough. This is the reason I bought my 40mm.

"full-time manual focusing"

Kinda wondered. I get the arguments that there are uses where a manual is fine, and I have a few of each, but the bottom line is that between AF and manual, only one can do both.

Still, looks like a fun lens for $99.
Better description might be "full time manual over ride." While using AF, you can grab the focus ring and manually focus. I won't buy a lens anymore that can't do that. I have an old Tamron lens that will actually be damaged by turning the MF while in AF mode. Blech.

BTW, it's $80 refurb from Canon which means like new or even new but brown box:

Excellent Nifty-fifty lens... No difference in image quality between STM and non-STM except quieter operations. Canon refurbs are good as new
I actually have both; the STM might be a bit quieter but not by a lot. Unlike the more expensive lens w/STM, the 24mm, 40mm and 50mm are pretty loud.
The 18-135mm STM OTOH is darn near silent.

That's misleading. He is reviewing the older lens with the plastic mount 50mm F1.8 II. The one in this thread has the steel mount and better build quality 50mm F1.8 STM.

Here's the same guy review the II vs STM:

My take: I had the II and the image quality was OK (a little weak wide open) but felt low rent. The new one has somewhat better image quality and feels much nicer

I didn't know that, but I bought a 50mm metal one for $50 used, so I have one anyway.
