I don't understand why this style of lamp is in, anything with a glass lampshade is impractical. Nobody wants to see a bright direct light blasting them in the corner of their eye, or directly in the middle of their eye. Indirect lighting is better, and is less straining on the eyes

It's not intended to light up a room or be a primary light source. It's a stylistic accent lamp that would use a very low wattage bulb, like one of those vintage Edison style ones.

No, it's not meant for you. This is meant as a decoration, for instance a living room. To highlight various decor and set mood.

Most of them are using a smart bulb these days where you can vary the intensity. So it still works!

Just to make you adore your light bulb more by it looks than it apparent brightness..

As I got older, I eventually considered design as much as function, sometimes more. Honestly I never thought I would care, but here we are. Maybe it's because I only ever cared about function, and that just got old.

The house I recently bought uses these clear glass fixtures with edison bulbs and I hate them for this reason. The previous owner used these edison style bulbs so they're not bright and don't 'blast you in the face' but at the same time they're not bright and therefore do a poor job lighting up the area they're in. Replacing them with bright bulbs makes looking at them unbearable so it's being stuck between a rock and a hard place.

For these lamps though I can say that the edison bulb is pleasant to look at so using it as a reading lamp is probably fine.

I was thinking the same thing. I suppose you could order it and then return it if you don't like it. Seems like a pain though especially if assembly is as difficult as some of the reviews seem to suggest

Do you think this could bd well used as a reading lamp? If so, what type of bulb would be recommended?

Same. I never would have yielded to anyone in my adherence to function over form, but more and more, I hunger for beauty. And no, "beauty" is not defined as function, pace the modernists.
