Can be used for that but is more designed as a way to get analog inputs (a lot of analog inputs for the price) into a digital audio workstation application (DAW). It may require a usb connection for power as well (I own a 2 input version which does require usb power)
If you have no need of getting the inputs into a DAW you may look into a small mixer or what's called a line mixer which are designed to combine multiple sources into a single (or several if needed) output. Probably better bang for your buck if not interested in recording in your situation.

I got the gen 2 and use it every day. Its a beast. the internal routing is killer.

Can this be used for mixing audio and mic from several sources into one headset?

If I needed more than my little 2i2, I'd probably be hitting buy right now.

I have the 2nd gen of this, works really well. For example when recording bass or guitar I have two mic inputs (different mics) and a direct input, record all three simultaneously to independent tracks, and either keep the one I like based on the context of the song and how it came through the mic or direct input, or utilize two of them for doubling effects. I record synth sources in mono too, so I've got six of those going into this in addition to the mic/direct instrument inputs.

Aside from the drivers and routing software directly related to this, I don't use any of the plugins and stuff they include.

I have an 18i20, constant bugs and crashes on windows 10. When it's stable it's great, but I have to pray every time I change sample rate or buffer size that it doesn't crash and it takes a good 5-10 seconds. Or, if I power it off or on while the pc is running, it crashes about 15% of the time.
Others have said great things about it. The dual headphone output especially, and the many IO is nice. Just wish it had DSP like some more expensive interfaces but of course that would make these more expensive.

How does this compare to the Tascam US-16x08? Been using a Tascam US-16x08 for years with great results but maybe this is better and would yield higher quality recordings? The US-16x08 is extremely stable with Win10 - no issues or crashes at all.
