SPOILER below:
Why did the show have to have a rule about the death note on every episode? They made such a big deal about all the rules that bind the death note, making it seem like the ending would bring together some epic use of the notebook in a way that would bend the mind of you the viewer. That didn't happen. I assumed that they tried to attempt it but it got so complex, and the use of rules ended up having so many flaws/holes in the plotline that they scrapped it. Why else would they spend so much time focusing on that aspect, only to completely abandon it by the end of the show? Also the character Near being inserted into the show towards the very end. It was so forced, so rushed, the character is so insufferable. Because of the constraint of time needed to end the show, he's solving problems at an obscene pace. L is supposed to be superior to him. He's supposed to be the world's greatest detective, then suddenly Near appears and they made it seem like he was far superior. They almost created a perfect show. It got rushed and ultimately left me wanting better cohesion at the end.
