About this Item:
  • Get into the game fast as you zoom past load times with blazing speeds of up to 5,150MB/s* (1TB and 2TB models). Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. The whole "no DRAM!" thing has gotten very played out. Most people won't need it/notice the difference. Many of the most popular and well rated drives don't have it. Same with the ubiquitous TBW ratings comments. Plenty of studies have shown even 600 TBW is plenty as a baseline and most people will never even hit that. The same studies have shown the majority of drives however well exceed their rated TBW multi fold.
Don't really need dram anymore with these modern controllers. They are being phased out.

Agree on all points, especially if like me, you're still using a machine with PCIe 3.0. I just replaced my Samsung 980 non Pro 1TB with this today just for the capacity. I benchmarked the 980 first at 50% capacity, then cloned my drive over to the WD. After getting it up and running I benchmarked the WD with the same data as the 980 had and the numbers are literally Identical on the older bus. As for TBW, by the time I buy a newer PC with PCIe 4.0 or whatever is current then, I'll probably be ready for a new drive anyway and just leave it in this PC to pass along to somebody who needs one. Not a gamer anymore so really any SSD is better than a mechanical drive. I just want my stuff to boot as fast as my current PC allows, and load stuff as fast as well. No need for a new PC for that since the 980 and this drive both accomplish that.

Nice I needed something to replace my 2TB Samsung 980 pro after it got stuck into Read-Only mode because of their firmware bug.

Can't you flash it to the new firmware that fixes that bug?

Decent price, but NO DRAM. I think/hope better drives will be this price soon... Would love to see a 4TB under $200, but won't happen.... yet/soon....

Where do you shove the DRAM, in an open slot or something?

Dramless SSDs are just fine for the intended purpose. Having no DRAM means less complex pcb, smaller/simpler flash controller, lower power draw (especially in idle)
Wait what. How is this from 4 years ago?

Anyway when I read this I realized that for a laptop where I'm primarily concerned about power/heat it means I should be looking for "no DRAM" instead of the best of the best?

Making this not a bad choice to upgrade the 256mb ssd in my laptop?

Thanks!

How are either of those relevant in an NVME discussion?

Can someone show a good 2.5 enclosure that is nvme to sata so I can slide one of these in my Shield Pro. I know I don't anywhere near the same speed but these sata prices don't seem to be dropping as rapidly as these nvme drives are

I think it's one of those 'nice to haves' as the unpaid experts have agreed on Reddit.
It's said to reduce wear and tear if there is such a thing on these flash ssd drives.

You have no need to be concerned about heat from these things. There is no moving part involved. Did you mistype the 256mb? You mean 256gb right?
If you need more space go for 1tb Crucial you can pick from the top link I posted.
It's supposed to run with even less power consumption, however minimal difference there can be between two ssds.

If you can wait a couple of weeks. There is likely to be even more discount on these.

You must be an editor constantly transferring large amounts of data requiring over 6000mb/sec of xfer speed. If NVME if what you're fixed on I guess you won't have need of my input on these SATA drives limited to only 3000mb/sec of transfer speeds.

I was putting an DRAM SATA option out there for the non-editors who may favor them and competitive priced drives if they can forego the NVME option.
