You don't need a heat gun to shrink tubing in a pinch.

Use the barrel of the soldering iron.
Looks to be standard price if you look at the history. Actually $8 a week ago.
I knew I'd find my people somewhere😂

I bought one almost identical to this. Everything in in was basically garbage. Iron stopped working almost immediately—as in within 30 seconds. I wouldn't buy again, not even for $5.

I used to work at an electronics manufacturer. Though new product was built with automated machines, repairs were all by hand. I used a Metcal iron daily. Certainly better than this in several ways, but I honestly could get by with this for a few days if I had to. The included solder would probably be my biggest complaint. Kester or bust. That electrical tape would go in the trash too.

Got this same kit for $11 like 6 months ago, to desolder the switches on an old keyboard.
You gotta wait forever for it to get hot enough to actually use and if you don't, you half-desolder and that's even more annoying to deal with. I broke like 10% of the switches lol.

This was mostly a hobby type thing, to move the switches to a new modular keyboard. The soldering iron is OK in a pinch, but I wouldn't buy it again knowing what I know now, at least not for longer jobs like this. If you're only splicing together a couple wires for a car radio etc, maybe consider just using a torch.

Looks like you get a bunch of stuff for a good price. Might want to switch out the holder though. If not, at least buy a tip cleaning wire mesh. They're usually inexpensive and are better for the tip than using water. Especially one like this that probably heats slowly.

I have one of these and it works pretty well. A lot of the addons are useless. Like the wirestripper, screwdrivers, tape, etc. It looks like they provide a really crappy stand now too.

YOu'd probably want to get more tips of various kinds and better solder, flux, and and solder wick.

I've used it plenty of times and its been perfectly fine. Nice that the iron seems to be a standard diameter.

Not sure how accurate / calibrated the temp wheel is but adjustable is a plus.

Appears to be a great kit for a beginner. I've always wanted to try, and for $10, I can ruin some electronics.
Get some junk boards and play with it, Spend some time on YouTube on how to solder.

It's how I picked it up and did some really nice mods to some retro video game consoles...

Use a lighter

Butane makes heat shrink brittle and can accelerate oxidation on certain solder joints.

Keep your lighter for other uses.

I never understood this mentality. Buying a cheap impossible to use unit as a beginner? Not only will you ruin stuff it will ruin you for good soldering and possibly cause a fire. Spend $80 on a digital 60+ watt Hakko.

$80 is prohibitive for some and this kit is perfectly fine to learn with. Why gatekeep this…
