Fathom is a metal body while Squall is graphite:

Good reel, great price for it. Not a southpaw so I have no use for it, but lefties have at it.

Not a fly fisherman are you? After decades, I have finally gone back to a spinning reel, bait caster an Abu, and this Penn.

Fly fishing you use your left hand to control the line, left hand with the reel when you need it.

So my Abu and Penn are both left handed. It's a joy not to have to constantly switch hands. I find a right handed reel just weird and I'm right handed!

This Penn Squall II is my favorite reel. I unfortunately can't use it as much as I would like, bit too much for pier fishing, I just use the 4000 spinning reel on the piers, from the beach the Squall is great, seldom do I get a backlash chunking a 6 0z weight with it into the wind.

How far can you cast with this?

They only make the CS for the 12 and 15 size I think.

The important question is how far can YOU cast with this. There are so many things that go into casting distance. Are you going to put this on a 6' boat rod or a 12' surf rod? How much weight are you using? Line diameter affects casting distance. Are you doing an OTG cast or a pendulum cast?

I'm right handed but use my left hand to crank on both spinning and baitcasting reels.

I understand the various reasons of why a right-handed person should consider using a left-handed conventional reel but the ergonomics never quite felt right to me. For spinning reels, I just got used to winding with my left-hand. Left-handed conventional and baitcasting reels weren't a big thing when I got into fishing so I just went with what options were available. I've tried using some left-handed conventional and baitcasting reels but I just can't do it. The mechanics are super awkward. I suppose muscle memory is a factor but a big part of me figures "Why change if it ain't broke?" haha

Ha, no I am certainly not. When it comes to fly fishing in the salt in the northeast, where on a good day I'm dealing with 15 knot winds in my face, I'm two left hands. The few times I tried ended so badly I retreated and the fly gear has remained in the box ever since.

I do love this reel though, and would have jumped all over the LH model if the ergonomics weren't screwy for me. I use it off my boat, and it's versatile - overkill but solid for bottom fishing, great for trolling, works for drifting bait in a slick.
