There's no "backwards compatibility" topic with PCs. Barring some special cases for very old games, I can play the same games today that I did in middle school.
A lot of my PS4 games ended up either being on PS+ or on a really good sale so we barely use the physical. I think our daughters copy of Sims 4 has been in the drive for at least the last six months and she barely plays it.
If we told relatives not to buy physical games and I bought the digital version of Sims 4 I could probably have gotten by just fine on the digital version. It's nice being able to change games without wandering around the room. I think the disc lovers are much like the vinyl album lovers - it's all about the ritual of putting a game in the box.

I always try to get a disc version for resale value years down the road. It doesn't add much but having a few games bundled helps a little.
Digital is convenient but locks the game to your account. Though there are ways to share the game and cut costs with close friends/family.
I definitely don't enjoy swapping diacs but when they are selling a digital copy for $60 and a physical for 47.99 or something, I'll opt for that.
Back when you could get all the Best buy perks ($10 pre-order, etc.), I could get a new game and trade it in weeks later for ~30ish and lose a few bucks. Impossible to do with a digital copy.
These days, a lot of games are going free to play with some modes and also being added to game subscription plans so it makes it less and less worthwhile. Not to mention those $10 pre-order bonuses are rare.

Overheard a guy while I was looking at games say if it was 2 years ago he would be all over buying that PS5 but now, meh.
All 3 consoles have a great library of games but with limited consoles available for so long combined with all the games coming out on One and PS4 made people feel like upgrading wasnr worth the $500.
For the companies digital format saves them money to distribute over copies they have to print. But for consumers when the seller holds all the keys they can control the market 100%. Whether they will pass onto the consumers the savings is yet to be seen.
