The price difference was already discussed in the original post. You could have revised your original post instead of adding more clutter.

Go read the rules first and talk to the mods if you still have an issue.

Also, no clutter. I already reported that deal as expired and it has been labeled so.

128gb SSD?

I remember that even back in 2013, an SSD of that size was considered small. (64gb was the bargain basement at the time.)

I would strongly urge everyone to *really think* about this, if it's something you are interested in. The RAM and storage are disgustingly small, and not upgradable.

In fact, nearly all machines in the Surface line are intentionally designed to not be opened easily. Out of warranty repairs are exceedingly expensive, and usually involve a device swap with a refurbished unit. Many repair shops won't work on Surface-branded devices, either due to sweetheart pricing agreements, technical challenges, or a combination of both. This is intended to be replaced within a smattering of years, as it has zero room for growth. It's planned obsolescence at best, ewaste at worst. These specs would be considered middling a decade ago. They're terrible today. No one will want to use this a decade in the future.

If you buy this, you need to ask yourself "Am I part of the problem?" when it comes to depleting natural resources and increasing heaps of ewaste hurting our environment. Because the more of these companies sell, the more they'll be incentivized to continue this behavior of underpowered, unrepairable technology.

This 100%. 128 GB is terrible. Most modern phones have more than this. If all you want to do is browse the web, you would probably be better off with a decent Chromebook (which you could get for less). If you want to actually use Windows programs, 128 GB will be really limiting. Microsoft should be ashamed to even have this level of storage as an option. I bought a Surface Pro 4 with 128 GB and it wasn't enough even back then, I sold it after a few months. If I ever need a decent Windows laptop again I will almost certainly be getting a Framework machine.

Technically, the storage is upgradable, though it's not a common form factor.

And you can pretty much add as much storage as you want via microSD. Should be fine for data, if nothing else.

A sample I saw had less than 33 GB used on the SSD, which still leaves a fair amount for apps. Not big games, but this really isn't the platform for those.

As for RAM, I've been surprised with how much an older Surface can handle with 8GB.

Uncommon form factors (that sell at a premium) are a very poor excuse for having upgradable storage. It's the sort of annoying "...but technically!" meme.

Oh no one is seriously considering using microSD as a daily use drive, are they? I mean, it's just acceptable for data on a low-access device like a phone. They get corrupted all the time on Raspberry Pis. I would treat them like USB sticks or floppy disks -- nice to have but 100% do not trust for longevity. Why not just make printouts and carry them instead, you won't need digital storage at all!!! [please don't do this]

128gb minus formatting overhead minus 33gb....no. I mean, I get it, there are budget machines -- but this ain't even pried as one of them!

And as for RAM, 8gb might have been acceptable 10 years ago. People even complain about Apple's M1 series needing more than 8gb of ram, and that's a highly optimized in-house architecture. The Surface? It's Intel. Need I say more?

Nope. Your opinions are noted. The printout analogy gave us a good basis for evaluating them.

I have used the microSD on an earlier Surface for files I accessed frequently. No failures yet, luckily. But I back up the entire PC. Anyone that trusts ANY storage device for longevity, including internal SSDs, is soon to be separated from their data.

lol. enjoy your adorable microsd card-powered surface laptop.

never heard anyone seriously suggesting using that. you have to be a troll. i mean, it's on-par....nay, it's even worse than letting a USB thumbdrive permanently stay connected to your machine. absolutely laughable in 2023.

folks, if you're reading this -- it's 2023. you absolutely don't need to use a janky duct-taped solution like using a microSD card as a primary storage device. it shouldn't even be considered.

you can get some really awesome refurbished laptops for sub-$250 with 8th gen i5/i7 processors, 512gb ssd, 16gb ram, etc. save something from going to the dump AND get a machine that'll last many more years of daily use.

but using a low-end piece of disposable consumer storage to mitigate being cheap and getting something intentionally underpowered -- all the while paying premium prices? there aren't many flattering words to describe that mindset. unless you work for MSFT, then they're just saying "thank you for your business."

I use mine as secondary supplement to my desktop-replacement. Good for travel, bedside, video calls and tasks needing a touch screen (I have the pen). I appreciate the good screen, good webcam, and it's silently FANLESS. I use my desktop-replacement for file storage (as well as my DYI NAS) and high-storage programs.

Back when storage was on spinning rust, I found that it was critical to usability to not exceed RAM because reading the pagefile caused a lot of disc thrashing and significant slowdowns. Now with the pagefile on SSDs, which continue to get even faster (heck, I used an Optane drive for the pagefile in my old computer), going back to an old tab in Chrome, for example, is... fine.

For those shitting on the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, the Surface Pro line just isn't for you. Yes, you can get a better-specced laptop for the same price. No, it will not be 3 lbs. No, it will not be half an inch thick. And yes, there are better ultrabooks if you want to use a laptop as your primary device. This particular specced Surface Pro SHOULD NOT be your primary computing device. If you want to use a Surface Pro as your primary device, it NEEDS to be at least 16GB RAM, 256GB (512 is better). Got it? Good.

Now that this is out of the way, who would want to buy an 8GB RAM, 128GB storage Surface Pro? I have one. I have a desktop at work and an Asus ROG laptop at home, and a Surface Pro 6 with these specs. Why do I have the Surface Pro? Because I travel every other month for a week or so and it is my primary device for those times I'm away. Yes, it is a little slow when I have Photoshop and AutoCAD open but I can deal with it because I appreciate not having to lug my Asus around.

This particular-specced Surface Pro should be used as a supplement to your primary HOME computer, not as your primary computer.
