$16.67/tb. I'd rather put new unshucked nonrecertified drives like this in my parents NAS. They don't need oodles of storage, just somewhere reliable and backed up to store photos, computer data etc.

For general NAS usage, is there really much difference in CMR vs SMR drives?

I wouldn't be writing a massive amount of data (except for the initial file transfer).

What's the difference with this $100 one from Amazon? Aside from p/n seems the same? Help me decide on this product: Western Digital 6TB WD Red NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD - 5400 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, SMR, 256MB Cache, 3.5" - WD60EFAX https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MYL7KVK

EFAX is the non-plus aka SMR drives. Yuck.

https://nascompares.com/answer/wd...d-red-pro/

tldr
Red is SMR 5400, Red Plus is CMR 5400, Red Pro is CMR 7200 with a better warranty

For general NAS usage, SMR is not recommended. However, for write-once, read-many scenarios like yours, it is perfectly fine drive with potential dollar savings. I use SMR drives for cold storage myself.

It's a nas storage mate doesn't have to be fast. This way less noise and heat.

The 10TB and 8TB versions also have discounts — 10TB w/ $30 off is $169, 8TB w/ $10 off is $149. Not as slick but still a discount.
