Typically the best value is to let your XBL/gamepass completely expire, then activate 1-3 years of XBL Gold, then sign up for Ultimate (usually they have a $1 first month offer) and it'll automatically convert your Gold to Ultimate for the full 1-3 year period.

Sounded kinda sketch and likely a gray market, but gave it a try anyways.

Bought it and got a screenshot of a redemption code immediately.
Entered into Xbox Live and totally worked!

No complaints!

A few days ago, I purchased 3 years (in 3 month codes) for xbox live gold for just under $140. Was the best deal I could find at the time. I also had a free 1 month trial for ultimate which I added after I put all the gold codes in. Gave me 3 years of ultimate, can't be bad for $140
Edit: Forgot to add, codes were US and from Eneba.

My account used to have Game Pass Ultimate, but it expired a few months ago, and I currently am not subscribed to anything. Is my account eligible to purchase 3 years of Gold (like you did) and then convert the 3 years to Ultimate for $1?

Yes you can do the upgrade / conversion again. But it may cost $15 for first month of Game Pass Ultimate since you had a previous subscription.
