Typically the best value is to let your XBL/gamepass completely expire, then activate 1-3 years of XBL Gold, then sign up for Ultimate (usually they have a $1 first month offer) and it'll automatically convert your Gold to Ultimate for the full 1-3 year period.

Why not just buy Game Pass Ultimate, one month at a time from CDKeys every month? Yeah, you have to wait for your previous month to expire, but it's $2.49-$3.39, for a single month. This is legitimately a question I have. I haven't tried it yet but will when my current subscription expires tomorrow, unless of course it's not possible for some reason.
(not sure if there's a difference other than region)

I think some people do this. When gold goes on sale for 30-40 dollars, you can buy that and convert to GPU, about the same price as what you are going to do but then you don't need to worry about buying/entering codes for the next 1-3 years.

I recently started doing this. About 4 months in and so far so good. It takes about 5 mins of work each month so not a huge time commit for the average monthly cost for Gamepass Ultimate of $3 a month.
