How is it getting through clay?

Read some reviews and says it works pretty good in clay.

Other reviews said you can't replace the auger but so that may be a tough sell

I have a lot of clay in my yard. It's mixed. I've put in a fence and a deck using a similar auger. Unfortunately, the auger wouldn't do good in solid clay. My buddies yard is mostly clay and we'd have to hand dig several inches to get started and spray the hole with water before it would begin biting into the dirt. Even then, it was slow going but saved him a fortune from hiring it done.

Review that said it can't be replaced, said it used a 7/8 shaft, which looks to be the same as the HF one: https://www.harborfreight.com/6-i...63041.html

on clay you need to clean the blade after few holes or it wont go in anymore
I just bought one myself , but I used tractor and even with 60hp power sometimes it was hard to lift it up and sometimes it went down like screw ,
I suggest you to go down few inch and put it out to make sure you dumped everything before it stuck

If you purchase this make sure that you don't hit a single rock or root. Watch videos before you use! Good luck to any purchaser. A thin-long spade shovel and a sledge hammer worked way better for me for installing fence posts.

Good price, but if you're planning on using for deck post footings, 6" won't cut it.

What about a simple wood retaining wall that doesn't need to retain much, just simply aesthetic along a driveway about 2-3ft tall? Just need to put some posts in the ground for that.

Post hole digger works great. I get that this saves energy and maybe time. But I've put up a mailbox and fence using merely a post hole digger

If you're just doing one fence, you might consider renting a tow-behind self-propelled digger instead. Much safer (won't throw you), and dead easy to use. Dug 11 holes in thick clay in about an hour.

Rented one of these from a local shop for $75 all in: https://www.homedepot.com/p/renta.../316822013

Rocks and roots are fine. Just have to have some arm strength to counteract the spin.

Digging a whole hole and not hitting either is unlikely where I live

For tough clay I found that uniformly grinding small serrated teeth into the cutting edge with an angle grinder helped it to bite into clay instead of spinning without traction.

Even though these smaller augers can be operated by one person, I would still -strongly- recommend two able-body people to operate it safely. It is far easier and safer for two people to control and distribute the torque jerk action if you do hit a rock or some other substantial object, and your back will very much appreciate not being the only one supporting and lifting the auger.

⚠️ALLLWAYS call the 811 dig hotline to mark any underground utility lines before you start digging even a single hole. Be sure you know where your sewer or septic pipe is before you start.
