I will say that I see VGA still in many hotel rooms that have a connections by the desk. Perhaps that's why it's in the travel dock - out dated yes but still in use in many hotels.

I work for a state agency and it seems like the state is always 5-10years behind in technology advancements. All our monitors use VGA. So yes there is a market for this, maybe not for you but there are other folks that need something like this. I'm buying one!

You can blame all the existing projectors that use vga and composite video as the main video inputs. This is also the reason why this dongle is a plus - it can connect to these ancient projectors.

Also have you seen the vast majority of sub $150 monitor inputs being sold today? It's usually some flavor of HDMI and vga.


btw monoprice does have a version of the dock with slightly different ports including 4k@60hz HDMI port but it's higher priced https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=44116

If its like a similar one that I have, the USB-C port is just for supply power input.

Edit: looks like I didn't see the 2nd USB-C port. The description makes it sound like it will pass through up to 100W via PD, but I suspect that's split between the host device and whatever is drawn from the other USB-C port.

You can blame all the existing projectors that use vga and composite video as the main video inputs. This is also the reason why this dongle is a plus - it can connect to these ancient projectors.

Haha that's a whole different topic…vga ones should, if anything, be more expensive because of the fact you gotta convert a digital signal to analog which requires more components….with hdmi and usbc it's all digital so there's less work around at making those dongles.

Ports listed in the post are wrong. Only 2 USB A ports.

I just need a USB-C hub with 4 USB A and a network port, but seems impossible to find at a decent price.

Been sort of on the lookout for a good USB hub, but not sure this is it... A relative needs a solution so he can have more ports for his gaming laptop. I think his monitors use DVI and HDMI respectively... And if I remember correctly, for some reason he can't do display out over USB C. Wish these things weren't so expensive... This is on the cheaper end, as I've seen some easily over $100 both online and at Microcenter.... If this had DVI instead of VGA, it might be decent for him. Not sure it'd be worth trying to use some kind of VGA to DVI converter...

if he can't do display out over USB C then this product isn't going to work for him anyway. In fact, none of the USB C docks will work.

If he just needs some extra USB ports you can get a much simpler and cheaper USB hub
