Not sure if Dyson is better in this regard, but when I see bladeless fans or air purifiers I always assume that they're quite loud.

Consumer Reports said this was quiet at low speeds. But overall scored real low. It only scored a 27 out of 100.

Quiet as in not noisy. They said it did a poor job of filtering the air.

The Honeywell Insight HPA5300B is also $170 at Best Buy and Amazon right now, if you wanted something that was quiet and filters pretty good. They rated scored it at 75 out of 100

I bought our dyson fan/purifiers knowing they are a compromise between being a fan first, and purifiers second and am happy with ours. It's not really comparable to dedicated air purifier- they are more like the markets other tower fan purifiers- we replaced our Honeywell air genius 3 and 5s filtered fans and are very satisfied. Sound wise they are about as loud in dB (maybe even quieter) I'd note that on 10(max) the pitch of the Dyson is higher.

The build quality and design is definitely better on the dyson- the power and speed buttons on our Honeywells kept failing and the tower fan blades on the Honeywell's would consistently develop a rattle after a year or two- which was terribly annoying when trying to sleep.

If you do any home automation at all it's definitely worth getting the Link or smart versions. Almost all these soft button models won't work with smart plug as they default to "off" state (this was another complaint with our Honeywell air genius models).

Also, the tower design obviously has the smaller footprint and takes up less room.
