I like to start off all my plants in these without doing any maintenance on them. When they are too big I move them to small plastic containers so I can acclimate them outside for a few hours per day, and then plant them outside if the weather is warm enough.
If I start around December I keep them inside under a cheap grow light until ready to acclimate.
I do this because the plants get huge quick with these things.
I have 20 - 30 plants ready to plant at the end of Winter that are 8 - 18 inches tall.

This thing easily paid itself off the first year I had it because I have not needed to buy one plant for my garden.

If you grow herbs and lettuce you might recuperate your principle in 10 years

If you order through AeroGarden, you get to pick your seed pod kit (herb, salad, or petunias - the cherry tomato is sold out) and you get a FREE additional bottle of Miracle Grow fertilizer. Amazing deal.

In for one with the CABIN20 applied. I have always wanted to try one of these. Does anyone have experience using their own DIY pods etc.?

Why not just buy one of the off-brand versions of these that do the same thing off Amazon for like $60?

I have one of these and it works great. Stick to just growing herbs and lettuce though. The tomatoes and strawberries get really overgrown and fall over. They also take 90+ days to bear fruit.

Can I just grow these in a basement? Or does it have to take countertop space for some natural light?

The unit does everything you need to grow. Basement would be just fine.

The price range on these is crazy. A $70 version then one over $300 that doesn't seem much different. Does a plain vanilla one work just as good as the high-end?

It's one of those things you'll use for a month then toss. It's a novelty. These don't grow enough herbs to be useful. I guess build your own if you really want to have a proper amount of herbs. A bucket with some holes in the lid and a grow light could accomplish about the same.

Former owner of a $300 one - albeit ten years ago.

Wrong.i have 2 of these. I fill a cup of basil from 2x basil plants per day, a tomato per day from 4x plants, one jalapeƱo per 2x days from 2 plants, green onions every day from 3x plants. A bell pepper every 4 days from 2x plants. I do have mine in a window, so I do get 1 hr of sunlight on them per day which helps their production.
