Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

Can someone just swap their sim card from another metro by T-Mobile phone into this and use it?

Yes. It's not number-locked.

Pretend I am not too smart....
I buy this and put it in a drawer. 6 months later, it is unlocked and can be used on ATT. Is that right?

I too bought this phone back in December, it's an excellent phone and battery lasts 2 days after fully charged. I can confirm it does NOT work with T-Mobile and maybe it does work with Tracfone as someone posted above.

The phone will be automatically unlocked 180 days after activation, but the phone MUST be activated in order for the phone to be unlocked after 180 days. You can cancel service (uncheck auto renew) at ANY TIME after activation, and you are NOT required to have service for the entire 180 days.

They have remote usb unlocking service which requires you to install Teamviewer on your PC so that the unlocking service guy/gal could log onto your PC and unlock. I believe that process will only unlock the phone for GSM carriers, not CDMA like Verizon, Total, Visible, and etc.

I have installed Google Voice and use it as a WIFI device for now, and since I activated my phone on 12/15/2022, the phone will be unlocked by 6/15/2023.

It's an excellent phone, I mean for $40 it's a steal if you can hold out for 180 days. BTW, check out the XDA forums to get more info about rooting and installing OEM firmware.

On my Samsung phones from Metro, after 6 month in the drawer, I had to open an app and request a network unlock. It was an automated / nearly instant process. Afterwards, it was fully unlocked.

It should. The model number 2215-4 is on the ATT whitelist https://www.att.com/idpassets/ima...etwork.pdf

The last weeks-long deal had stock replenished Monday mornings which quickly sold out. Keep checking.

Tried again on mobile, different everything. No go.

Then directed to go to a store or call, but a hold was placed on my Apple card.

I give up.
Yeah I tried to cash in four free months of Apple music via Best buy and the amount of time I spent troubleshooting it.... Sometimes nothing really is free or a good deal when it creates that many headaches. This is a good deal on paper. Motorola's biggest knock against them is lack of updates long-term but that's really not a complaint on a phone you pay 40 bucks for
