I don't qualify for the education discount at this time. There have also been reports of some performance issues with the M2 with lower amounts of RAM/HD space.

M1 mini at 256GB has faster SSD speeds than the M2 256GB mini due to its 2-chip NAND layout (vs 1-chip on the base M2) - approximately double the speed. This is a good deal vs retail pricing - the M2 is not 28% faster to account for the increased price, plus you have to factor in the slower SSD. If you qualify for edu on the M2 it really depends which spec you'd rather focus on (cpu speed vs ssd speed). Personally I'd rather have the faster SSD speed at the slightly lower price.

EVERYONE gets the edu discount.

Also performance issues...nope. Even the $512gb is a WAY better deal for the extra

This has been discussed at length. Hardly no one will noticed the reduced SSD speed in real-world use.

EXACTLY.... M2 NEW for $500 is a no-brainer compared to $470 for a refurb M1 thats a 2.5+ year model

my comment is meant for people that maybe know a little better, or that are just more tech-savvy. those TB4 ports are capable of some massive speeds even now - who knows what might be more commonly available for them in the next few years. the 256gb m2 mini is nerfed right out of the box in that regard. the increase you get going from m1 to m2 on the base model is not worth what you have to give up - even for 30 bucks.

the whole thing is still an "old" model - all they did was bump the cpu and change the nand quantity. it's kind of a travesty next to all the advancements the pro model got.

Ehhh.... the fact that they also dropped the price by $100 certainly doesn't make it a travesty in my book.

The people who are tech savvy and know a little better know this entire business of SSD "speed problems" was generated by the YouTube idiots, and has little basis in reality unless your 8x5 job is to copy files from your Mac SSD to a Thunderbolt 4 SSD. The key part in disk IO when you USE a computer (vs. running a single benchmark, with a single thing it measures, like BlackMagic) is random IO. Random IO speed went up slightly in the move from M1 to M2. The overall experience, speaking of disk, will typically be slightly faster or about the same.

Barring that, find other things to worry about. The M2 CPU speed upgrade, addition of ProRes encoder, and 40% faster GPU upgrade are all more than worth the $30 upcharge. Plus you get a 2.5 year newer model.

I think you missed the point of what I was saying. This is a good deal for the previous model, particularly if you are not eligible for edu, and especially if you require ssd transfer speeds in the neighborhood of the old model vs the slower speed of the new model. It's not something people on youtube just made up - it's exactly half the number of NAND chips. so you get half the speed - that's just the way the technology works. Apple could have mitigated that with faster NAND, but chose not to. You can bottleneck the SSD on the 256GB m2 model with just 2 Samsung T7 external SSDs - which ironically would cost less than the upgrade price for a larger Apple SSD. True most people don't need that, but that doesn't make this any less of a good deal for the people that do need it. A slick deal doesn't have to be a deal for everyone.
