the i3 Microcenter is just substantially better in a way my bullet list can not capture, they are just different types of machines is what I am trying to signify. Yet I like both.

Of course I can still find fault with the $200 Microcenter laptop, but my fault here is the screen and for that price it is an acceptable trade off.

I bought the surface laptop go deal (buydig through ebay) the other day for $207. Laptop in excellent condition, well packaged. The packaging didn't quite look like OEM microsoft but did have a cover slip with surface image. Got a Samsung m.2 2230 form factor 256gb for $15 delivered, like-new through Amazon.

With the emmc storage, it feels like a very fun, super premium 'toy'. Can't wait to get this thing apart and upgraded so it can become the most premium $230 laptop the world has ever seen lol.

Thanks. I was also able to find the 81X700FTUS model/specs on that page using the search. It does appear there is a free spot for a 2.5" HDD/SSD up to 1TB. For what it's worth, I also found some pics of the board and the user indicated it does not come with a SATA cable or connector and the connection is under the battery. :/

I can't seem to find this specific model/specs listed on any other stores (amazon, bestbuy, etc or even lenovo site) to see any price comparison or reviews. Anyone else? That seems a little weird to me.

If the motherboard has the connecting point, then yes, buy an SATA connector cable which Amazon, eBay and the like sell. You may also need a bracket to hold the SSD, depending upon how the drive bay is set up. Some such bays permit a drive to be directly screwed in, but others require a bracket, a metal or even rubber type. You won't know exactly what is actually needed until the case is opened and the detail is examined.

Same. But. It is common for vendors, like Lenovo, to create part numbers specific to an industry (like government or education) and a reseller, like Microcenter, Best Buy, etc.

See my other posts as I found that specific model number on the Lenovo site (with help from another poster here).

If Lenovo has left in the SATA connector on the motherboard, which I strongly believe is the case per specs, all you need is a standard SATA drive cable to connect the drive. See my other posting about the bracket.

Very much yes. (I am about to negate myself here, it will do what you want but I want to signify when it will not do what you want.)

If the kid is 8 to 12 and they have the precocious bug (not all kids, but let's say 1 in 4 kids) where their precociousity is tied to technology and electronics (not books, not sports, not the dozen other things for I feel all 8 to 12 have a passion tied to 1 or more things). If you had that kid at 8 to 12, they will either love it more or get frustrated by its limits.

As I said in the Walmart $129 laptop thread, that cpu/ram/emmc is the threshold of good enough. It does so many things well but does not do everything well, thus it is the perfect zone of sometimes you are happy and if you push it you will be frustrated. Hehe aka the zone where the cheap tinkerer start to love and adore a thing but also the same place where others may get frustrated. (The word toy I used earlier is a term of endearment for me, I am that tinkerer.)

My 65 year old dad would love that $129 dollar machine. (I am putting this in a different way) hug
