No, it's fine to remove. I broke one free that sat for 10 years under use, no problem. The impacting is better (less destructive) to loosen stuck bolts than using pure torque. Pure torque is more likely to strip or destroy the bolt.

my mistake was not changing the anode years earlier.. just gonna start saving up for a tankless

I would say it's not worth it if you're worried about it. $600 or so for a new one replaced on the schedule you choose beats the heck out of $600 and gotta do it right now if you break it off.

I don't think emptying the tank is necessary, if that helps. Just close the input, and ease off some of the water pressure. Maybe WD-40?

Well he has a point -- the pre-heated water is unlikely for drinking (normally you'd use water from the cold tap, then heat in a pot or kettle or whatever).

Although you might be showering in it, etc., still get it in your mouth and so on. This is why I didn't want to put anything on the threads in mine and tried the impact wrench.

The first thing I tried a while back, was having the tank almost full of water (for weight), had my wife hold the tank with her arms around it, used a long breaker bar and a pipe. Even with all that going for me, the whole tank still rotated instead of the damn anode rod.

When I went to an impact tool I started with the smallest one I've got (12v impact driver), and successively went higher in power until I finally got it free. In my case a mid-torque 18V wrench got it loose.

I was worried about the vibration spiderwebbing the glass liner. I still don't know if that happened or not, but I don't think so. Also with all the tools that failed, I only impacted for maybe 5 or 6 seconds before deciding "it's not happening" and graduating to a bigger tool.

YMMV.

Best advice is probably the tip posted above, to wrap it in Teflon tape when it's new, so this problem will never happen. But I didn't think of that at the time. Live and learn.

I have a 1/2" Milwaukee mid-torque impact wrench with adjustable torque that kinda guarantees against breaking a bolt head off. If you've got a rusty bolt, PB Blaster has worked for me in the past. You got generously spray it on and wait. If you can get to the threads of the bolt, spray it on the bolt from that angle too.
