It's a short story. Been a while but I read first, then watched the movie. Enjoyed both. The story is obviously much more detailed and I think I had a stronger emotional reaction since it had more time to build and deliver.

Highly recommend this and all other stories by Ted Chiang.

I'd argue it's one of the rare instances where the film beautifully conveys what's written in the source material. Having said that, Ted Chiang is one of my favorite authors and I strongly recommend picking this collection of short stories up if you're interested in thought provoking "what-if" scenarios rooted in logic / science.

I saw the first 90% of the movie and then fell asleep confused. Only later did I wake up and re-watch it only to realize the movie is outstanding. Easily one of the best I've seen. Very creative, emotional, and excellent acting. If the books are similar then I'm in.

Am I the only one who thinks this movie was boring as hel*? It was full of pseudoscientific cr@p, stuff that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Only thing going for it was cinematography and Amy Adams. I mean Amy Adams as the actor, not the best linguist in the world who can decipher an alien language in a couple of months... SMH...
It's science FICTION. Either you enjoy it or you don't.

What you said can be said for anything, not just for science fiction, so you didn't need to capitalize the word "fiction". Based on your reaction, I guess you enjoyed it. What did you enjoy about it? It's a serious question, I'm really curious.
For one, it was not anything close to blowing up aliens and more about how human beings as a race can approach the unknowns with pure curiosity. And two, life is circular and we sometimes can't tell the beginning from the end. But hey, to each of his/her own.
