This is not a Made in Japan model.
This seems to be asked over and over but I will take a stab at answering it anyways.

To some, the difference between that $20 Walmart rice cooker and something like this, will be small, and to some it will be huge. Both experiences are valid.

The main difference is that these kinds of rice cookers are superbly skilled at not just cooking rice perfectly, but keeping it perfectly warm and moist for hours and hours. Beyond that, they've added features like delayed start, timers, programs to cool things like steel cut oats and quinoa, brown rice, etc.

Example use cases I've heard of are, "Members of my household get home at different times, and the rice is always perfect and ready for each person."

Or, "I like steel cut oats to be ready for me as I wake up, and so I set it the night before, and around 6am the house smells like my grandma is back at home."

Or, "We use the Instapot to cook a stew, and this machine to cook rice, simultaneously."

If you are very skilled at using a normal pot at cooking rice, or very satisfied at using a $20 Walmart rice cooker, that's splendid. You should continue doing that. If you have a unique and clever way of cooking quinoa that you have mastered over many years, also wonderful. If you are not a picky eater, and doubt you will appreciate the consistency and quality of cooked rice these kinds of machines are able to provide, great!

In each of these cases you have saved yourself $100.

On the other hand if you do like cooked rice/oats/whatever that's more consistently cooked (soft when it's supposed to be, chewy when it's supposed to be, creamy when it's supposed to be), and feel like trying something new, this machine should be far better at making it than a $20 Walmart cooker.

Hope this helps.
i have it. works good but slow. takes about 65 minutes to cook rice. does not matter if its 1 cup or 3. 50 minutes for kinva. the non stick pot has scratches after only few month of use, and not with something metal ..

Ordered this when I first saw it posted in the neuro fuzzy cooker thread.

I believe most zojirushi cookers take a longer time since they first soak the rice.

How is it with smaller cup measurements like 0.5 ? Does any rice stick to the bottom ?

I sought out an older 3 cup Zojirushi when this was closer to $150. 3 cups is the perfect size for 2-3 people households. Plus, it can cook extremely small amounts of rice and have it turn out good. The 5.5 cup cookers typically struggle to cook amounts under 100 grams of rice.

Couple things. The use case for these devices is to cook rice for a busy family. You use it in conjunction with the timer functionality to have perfect rice ready when you get home from work. It takes an hour for white rice and nearly two for brown. Also, if it is like mine, the measuring cup is actually 3/4 cup. This is a traditional measure of rice, I'm told. That measuring cup is important to recognize because it corresponds to the line measurements inside the "bowl." It won't produce good rice if you use a 1 cup measure.

65 minutes? That doesn't sound right. Did you use the delayed start?

The starting temperature of the water affects the total cook time. When I use 180 fahrenheit water instead of cold water it takes 15 minutes less on the normal white rice program.

So, safe to say it will take around 45-65 minutes to make white rice?

Any experience with brown rice, oatmeal or quinoa?

I do the quick cook every time and comes out great. Takes 40 minutes. I've had mine for over 5 years. Decided to buy a replacement pot, which is a common thing to do, and is likely to wear out first. Btw I cook rice almost daily.

MUCH better size for 2-4 people. 1cup of rice is enough rice for a 2 person meal. So the 5cup models make enough rice for a small army. I make 1/2 cup lunches several times a week in mine. Can't do that with a giant 5cup maker.

I have an older model since 2005 and it still works great but replacing the non stick liner is expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions for replacement? Or a suggestion for a similar rice cooker with a stainless steel liner? Thanks

Not to thread crap but it seems that Zojirushi is a high-end rice cooker. But what is the real benefit of this vs $20 walmart model?
