Great games. I played these when they were new, day one, but they certainly haven't aged well. If you are used to FO3, NV, and FO4, it'll be hard to go back to much slower turn based combat. Regardless, the story is timeless and should still be a must-play for anyone that enjoys the more modern entries, especially NV.

Aged way better than the D&D infinity engine games that's for sure.

Can you name a role playing game from the late 1990s that aged well?

Thanks OP. I've been meaning to get fallout tactics for a while and I've never played any of these. Let's see if i ever get to any of them with my massive backlog....

On the flip side, those of us that played these when they came out found the new versions of the Fallout to be dim versions of these games and never liked them. Given their derivation from the Fallout story of 1 and 2, many found them to be post apocalyptic games that were only named Fallout.

Couldn't agree more. Fallout 3 was such a boring game with the absolutely worst writing. At least New Vegas is a pretty good game with significantly better writing, if not held back by technical limitation and alot of bugs. Fallout 4 I can't bring myself to finish.

Nope looks like lego characters and perspective is weird at times making navigating a little difficult at least to modern standards. I played it in late 2000's so I don't have a nostalgia for it like most but it does have a great story and the cut scenes still hold up pretty good

These were free on GOG a while back, check your libraries if you have an account.

These are some of the finest CRPGs ever made, with a lot of depth in character customization, exploration, and combat. The random encounters are pretty interesting, and the combat is fine as long as you're looking for the classic experience and not the shooty experience. The newer games move faster, but this took away the strategy and depth offered here, including blinding an enemy, crippling their arm so they can't attack, or a leg so they can't run to or away from you. Even attacking their 'reproductive zones' can cause enemies to pass out, become weaker, or just make funny comments.

High intelligence and charisma stats open lots of dialogue options, while low intelligence stats open lots of other options (yes, the NPCs will treat you different if you roll dumb). There's so much depth to this game newer entries just cannot reproduce because of how different they are.

I don't have to defend these games nor do I want to, they speak for themselves, and hold up just fine for CRPGs that are not action-based. There's nothing out there like them, except maybe Tactics, but that wasn't well received in its day either.
