The reason is Hue.

That TP Link would be fine for someone just looking to add one strip. It's just when you start mixing and matching different brands of strips, it can become a mess of different brightness and colors not matching.

If you want to stick with a cohesive lighting plan, hue is the best. They use higher quality LEDs and components. They rarely have weird issues, but you really need a hue bridge because Bluetooth sucks. Hue is Bluetooth without bridge, and zigbee with a bridge. I believe the TP Link are WiFi.

I have bought my hue over the years when they're discounted. I've only had two bulbs fail ever. They all continue to work well with HomeKit and dynamic scenes in the hue app. My mom has hue everywhere, and her lamps just operate on timed automations daily without me having to do tech support.

Onvis makes a reasonably priced HomeKit strip on Amazon. I don't know anything about that one, but might be worth a look.

Anyone know what reason there is to spend double (2x) this when TP-Link is available and HomeKit compatible on Amazon?

My experience over the last several years:
  • I hate having to use multiple apps to control the lights in my house. Sometimes you can set them up to use Alexa, Google, or Apple, but often you only get basic functionality through those systems, losing some of the more interesting or useful features built in to the manufacturer's app. Until multi-admin and other features of Matter/Thread bring universal control across brands (I'll believe it when I see it), my rule is to stick with one brand per room. I have gotten rid of everything but two smart lighting brands in my house in order to simplify control.
  • All of my smart lights are full-color capable, but I find myself using White 90% of the time. I also love being able to choose the white color temperature throughout the day. Now I choose all my smart lighting based on their white performance. The Hue strips in this listing use three separate LEDs per segment; warm white, cool white, and RGB color. I find this gives me truely great white performance compared to other strips I have tried.
  • If I had to buy another LED light strip today, Philips Hue or Philips Wiz would be at the top of my list
  • Reviews about the white performance of LED strips are supprisingly hard to find.
  • See this review: I tried 12 light strips and found a hidden gem! [youtu.be]

Hue is the best in the market now, been using them for years — they worth their price tag. Also, if you have hue connected to google home, try "ok gg, sleep my lights" — it's basically what i use everyday before sleeping

Buy once, cry once.
I built a large covered patio (35X20) with an internal perimeter ledge for led strip lights. Started with TP Link, didn't like it. Moved to Hue light strips, but truly need a diffuser. I'm finally going to give in and get the hue 5M outdoor light strips. Hue just works. Installed stirps in my kitchen at least 5 years ago and they have worked flawlessly ever since. Bulbs all over the house.
Expensive, but I prefer Hue hitting my hue hub rather than showing up on my wifi device list.

I bought a ton of hue lights 8 years ago. I use most of them every day. They've always just worked, no delays, nothing to debug, and not a single light or strip has failed in that whole time and I have most of their products.

3rd party apps is another. I highly recommend the OnSwitch mobile app. It's been just as reliable for that many years and is far better than anything else I've used, including Hue's apps.

Philips makes the most color accurate LEDs in the business, you can't sync scenes with Hue and 3rd party lights, and some people don't want a dozen apps installed to control different brands.

Yeah, that's another benefit- you have one device on your DHCP table instead of 50 individual lights. Some routers can only handle a certain number of devices.

You can cut them and they do make coupling kits for the cuts.

this is a different product from Philips Hue's gradient light strip, right?

The gradient product is newer and more expensive, but also has more features and a better diffuser if I remember correctly.

the nanoleaf light strip is pretty good and uses thread which makes it super reliable which was the selling point of hue and it's hub based communication . i have hue bulbs and the colors are nice but the nanoleaf strip for $35 is very nice too
