This is a pretty great deal. I may wait for refurbished or 2nd hand deals, but if I had a Micro Center in my area, this may be too good to pass up.

Not really a good deal

Is 8GB memory enough in 2023? Apple runs "different", right? I hear PC fans debating whether or not to build a system with 32 or 64 gigs in 2023 for futureproofing. Is Apple really that well optimized?

The EDU deal is only good for college students and teachers from reading the policy page at Apple.

It doesn't even appear applicable to people who have kids in K-12.

I think the eight gigs narrative is Apple fan boys way of coping with the ridiculous upgrade cost. If you wanted to say, use parallels to possibly run Linux or Windows on the thing, you're definitely gonna need more than eight gigs.

If you want to play games on it, the video ram comes out of your main memory so you're probably gonna want more ram for that.

If you're a computer programmer you definitely want more than eight gigs.

And if you're planning on keeping it for more than two years, say five, you're probably gonna want more ram. Because even macOS uses more RAM over time and version updates.

Dude is out here reading the policy page instead of trying for himself lmao

Do me a favor brother, go to the checkout page and take a screen shot of the verification they're asking for

Do you do it with shipping or store pick up? How that work?

Edit: Ok for shipping i guess its jus as easy as making an order, rofl.

Just did it.

While I would qualify for the educational discount, I did in store pickup at an Apple Store and they didn't want to verify anything other than see my ID to prove who I was.

That is not exactly accurate. If you are buying FOR a college student, you are eligible. You do not need to provide any info about the college student at all, nor provide any proof.
Just FYI.

Why would you need Parallels for Windows? Windows 11 is now compatible with Boot Camp.

Maybe you don't understand what Parallels is. It isn't the same thing as Boot Camp which doesn't even exist for Apple Silicon Macs.

No amount of "optimization" will ever let 8GB of memory hold more than 8GB of data. The answer here is pretty obvious.

"Unified Memory" is just marketing for shared memory that on-chip components can all access quickly. It's a good thing but it's still shared memory and isn't a replacement for more memory.

I remember when the M1 came out, there was a video comparing two configurations with different RAM sizes. It made almost no difference in those tests including RAM intensive apps. Wonder if that is still the case for the M2 generation…

Well no - nothing has really changed in that regard. Not sure what test you are referring to but the general consensus would still be that most users would be fine with 8GB on a mac - unified or not. Those that really need 16GB know who they are and are probably not looking at this price point for a computer anyway.
