Dell refurbished is old. This i3 cpu is faster than those 8th gen i7 cpu. This has an empty slot that can add at least one 8g ram. I think you can add up to 32g.

You obviously don't know how fast these i3 12th gen processors are...they would smoke those old used/refurbished i7s without a sweat

Good luck with lenovo products. My parents took forever picking out the right one, only used it very VERY rarely (probably like 3 times during the warranty) and now it stopped working at best buy even told them they can't fix it. Like seriously how do you have a $1k+ laptop that is unfixable in a year of barely using it? Also, in the tracking it kept moving all through China. lol.
Still much better than POS HP laptops

With a USB 3.2 connection you can easily get a portable ssd that will give better speeds and doesn't need to be kept inside of the laptop. And it'll be faster than the 2.5" drive.
Reasonable consideration, but not feasible in the field of repair/replacements.

If hers is that old, apparently all she needs is for email/web surf & such. Yes, this would be fine (assuming you don't get a lemon). The fingerprint reader & back-lit keyboard is nice, but the speed of this, compared to her old one, should knock her socks off. Repped, OP.
But then her feet will be cold.

Just get it. I buy laptops to test them out and the curiosity of this is getting to me.

Yes it is. It's a 12th generation CPU.

Anyone know if the USB C port can be used for charging?
Also does it have an extra ram slot for upgrade of RAM?

i3 and 8gb RAM isn't very future proof, but if she is a very light user, it might be ok for a few years. i5 and 16gb would be suggested if budget allows. One of the Dell refurbished business machines for $150 would be a better deal.
No way man, i3 is just a title. This processor is very powerful, especially for something in this price range.

This CPU has 2 modern Alder lake CPU cores (with hyperthreading) that gives it very good single core performance by today's standards. It also has 4 effenciency cores that each are on par with a normal 7th gen i7 core. In short, it trounces any mobile 7th gen CPU.

Not to mention this has 64 Execution units at a higher clock and smaller fabrication on the iGPU compared to 24 in those DELL's. It should be 3-4x more GPU power.

As for ram, this is upgradable. All in all, this is definitely worth the extra cash if it's in your budget.

Pulled the trigger as well. Good laptop for one of my employees using basic Office 365 apps working remotely. Bells and whistles unnecessary. I am not an expert and 8gb seems low but I am hoping it will be ok for office work.

Picked up one of these only to have such a bad experience with it. First off, who on the Windows team thought having typing sounds on by default was a good idea?

I ended up returning this though. Third party support unless you want to shell out additional money, but the biggest reason is they counted the 1-year warranty from DATE OF MANUFACTURE, not date of purchase. In my case that gave me a 7-month warranty. They offered to give me the year from purchase but ended up denying the request two days later.

it's hilarious that people still get hung up on brands on what is now essentially a commodity. Every single one of these laptops, including Macbooks, comes from the same Foxcon factory in China.
