Dell refurbished is old. This i3 cpu is faster than those 8th gen i7 cpu. This has an empty slot that can add at least one 8g ram. I think you can add up to 32g.

You obviously don't know how fast these i3 12th gen processors are...they would smoke those old used/refurbished i7s without a sweat

I bought an Ideapad from Costco a year and half ago. Screen is black with no display. Keyboard lights up and I can hear the fan spin. Hooked it up to tv through HDMI and still no picture. Going through the process of 2nd yr warranty through Costco. Wouldn't recommend Lenovo either. My old Gateway lasted almost 10 years.
yeah longer costco warranty is nice. They thought about getting extended warranty through lenovo. Too bad they didn't! On theirs it gets windows started yup, I think, but then it shuts back down. They were told it was a bad ssd. Then they replaced the ssd and said it still happened. Maybe the best buy people are just dumb and someone else could fix it.

Still much better than POS HP laptops
yeah that is the problem is about every company seems to have so many issues. I had a dell where the psu went bad quickly and I think I've had issues with every hp.

it's hilarious that people still get hung up on brands on what is now essentially a commodity. Every single one of these laptops, including Macbooks, comes from the same Foxcon factory in China.
I once had a client whose manufacturing facility produced multiple brands of household products (e.g. laundry detergent). Same factory, yes, same quality, no.

i3 and 8gb RAM isn't very future proof, but if she is a very light user, it might be ok for a few years. i5 and 16gb would be suggested if budget allows. One of the Dell refurbished business machines for $150 would be a better deal.
I hope you won't get offended for my saying this, but I think most people who buy a PC of this price level have particularly high expectations, including future-proof-ability.

In addition, while I could be wrong, I really don't think that this configuration is going to be that bad even three years from now so long as the user's needs remain basic (just you yourself stated), which is again usually the case with people who buy at this price point.

I know you are using the hyperbole for sarcasm, but the true picture does resemble what you say.

I used to go to Taiwan and China because of then my firm's involvement in PC manufacturing. I found it rather interesting to join an ad hoc meeting among Dell, Apple, and Lenovo executives in the lobby of the same manufacturing facility (can't name it but it was not Foxconn) because all of these brands' products were being assembled at this one place. This is not unusual at all.

This is years ago, but a Japanese client my firm represented demanded in the contract that their products' manufacturing line had to be dedicated to them, not mixing with other brands which did happen where allowed. Naturally the dedicated line cost our client more, but that was what they wanted in order to assure the quality they expected. I was one of those mules who were sent to China to spot-check on the facility's compliance.

And there were other lines in the same facility that were being shared by different brands.

In for 1. My needs are basically Microsoft Office. Primarily Access.

I bought this with the Target card and got $15.00 off. I have not picked it up yet. On second thought, I am going to cancel the sale and repurchase it with a credit card that doubles the manufacturer's warranty. This essentially provides a second year of coverage for $15.00.

As an IT professional, I'll give my take:

Features I love seeing are 1080p, "full featured" USB-C (will output display and you can charge from it), upgradable to 16GB RAM, 12gen Intel, Fingerprint reader, Wi-Fi 6 2x2 and Bluetooth 5.1. If you sign up for the Target reloadable card (not a credit or debit) you can save additional 5% making this a steal at $285. Short of playing demanding video games, this laptop can do a LOT for you.

I own a $1000+ MSI Creator laptop, and I'm still going to buy this IdeaPad as an around the house/general use device. For the price, why not? This should last reasonably well into the future as long as you don't expect it to perform miracles for you.
