Yup. For anyone out of the loop -- the newest Synology models use AMD Ryzen Embedded processors, which are more powerful on paper than their Intel counterparts. EXCEPT that there's no integrated GPU, so any multimedia tasks (like transcoding, which is super common in things like Plex/Emby) are done entirely on the CPU.
What that means, in plain English, is that doing simple tasks like streaming a video from your NAS to your TV can saturate the CPU usage, preventing you from performing other tasks. This doesn't occur on the Intel models (e.g. DS920+) because the iGPU handles it with ease.
I don't recommend the consumer level AMD models (e.g. 723+/923+) over the Intel models (720+/920+). But if you're running a small business and don't care about multimedia usage, then I can see the appeal of the Ryzen models. But only in specific use cases, like running TONS of Docker containers, for example.

REALLY sucks they dropped the Intel processors on these in favor of AMD.
PLEX transcoding is nowhere near as good. Looks like my old 1815+ will keep cranking.

Would love to upgrade but Plex is a crucial feature and can't justify an upgrade without it
The 1821 has a pci slot. Might be able to buy a small quadro card and put it in there. I ran plex on synology but it ran like garbage every other version. So I bought a couple of used servers and put old quadro cards in it to do the transcoding. Plex chokes on atmos audio with 4k. I have had a life time plex subscription for a really long time. I think when it was like 50 bux. Got tired of them priortizing features that i wasnt interested in⦠instead of basic functionality so I switched to emby. It transcodes disturbingly fast. I retired my 3 plex VMs and am only using emby now. It can transcode 4k and does everything better than plex except for 2 things interface related and one type of hdr content but that is a likely a config issue on my part. You dont have to register with emby if you dont want to you can just point people to the host address (using your dns or ip). And you dont have to connect to the internet to use it or any of that stuff that makes it hard to use. (I know you can use it without an internet connection but configuring that is a hassle.)

I like where synology is heading.. AMD has embedded GPU and they are much better than intel in the long run but as of now none of AMD embedded GPU are being use. i bet they have one line up already...
That is not true. My ATOM transcodes 1080, but doesn't do 4k (not enough power).
He's talking about hardware accelerated transcoding. Atoms don't do that. They do trivial 1080p transcoding which honestly a raspberry pi could probably do.

He means hardware encoding (Intel QuickSync, NVIDIA NVENC, etc.) You can use any CPU for software encoding as long as you have enough threads to throw at the problem.

Yeah. I am upgrading my 1815+ to 16GB today... Had for years but never used it to it's potential. I was always a readynas fan and with 102 and 312 handling my needs, my gifted 1815+ just sat... But man is it a beast!! I moved a lot of duties to it and about to run even more from itike gitlab. I always knew it was slick, but for just storage, readynas was good. But this thing is amazing.

Lol it couldn't back when the 1815 came out.
Hell, 4k wasn't really even a thing back then.

This is a great price on a great NAS from a great seller
I have predecessor 1817)
Regarding PLEX... and this servers lack of PLEX performance...
I agree that it makes more sense to have more horsepower at the display with something like 4K Apple TV (to make up for lake of GPU in Synology NAS). Because I love their NAS line and have Installed many at client sites and never regretted.
I've been running PLEX
Server on a mac for many years because of limited NAS horsepower. First on a Mac mini Then an old Mac Pro. (With the media remaining on NAS). Has worked great until 4K came along. So I put in refurb M1 Mac mini ($500) last year as my PLEX
Server and 4K issues went away π (plus PLEX is the snappiest it's ever been) so it was worth the money to me.
