Don't buy this printer. The inks dry out quickly and if you don't use OEM inks (which are expensive; try Costco.com) the prints come out mediocre at best. Don't even THINK about printing photos - it'll be much cheaper if you send your prints to CVS or Walgreens.

I'll never buy another inkjet printer again. If I want color I'll get a color laser printer - they may be more expensive but I wouldn't have to deal with clogs or inks drying out.

If you want photos printed, it's cheaper to take to a store that does digital prints

Would this be good to use for just a fax machine?

Laser is a problem for road warriors like me - all that bouncing around in a truck makes quite the toner mess. Unfortunately, inkjets that use cartridges are the only safe solution for me - I take them out and put some electrical tape over the nozzles and electrical contacts to prevent a mess until the infrequent occasion when I need to print.
Sounds like even the inkjet is a pain in the arse.
I would probably look into getting a thermal printer if I were in your shoes.

(Not recommending that printer, just using it as an example)

For those saying to print photos at Walgreen's: it's not about cost (for me at least) , it's about the convenience of being able to print photos at home, on demand, when you want/need them.

I swear the Laser Printer Manufacturers Association has its bots firing on all cylinders on SD these days…my goodness

This is blatantly not true. You think manufactuers want to encourage you to use 3rd party cheap ink? Ridiculous.
It was in the past, but with the recent updates, it's no longer true. You're BLATANTLY wrong to say that was never true. I have been using generic cartridges for a long time now!

They've gone up in price since pandemic. I've recently bought 3 used on OfferUp.com. those printers have a lifetime print count and it'll show you how many prints it's made. I personally have the hl2390dw. The d in the back means duplex printing and the w is for wireless connectivity. The w is a must for me. New ones are like 100-200. I got the used ones for 25-75. Ones with scanners are a little more, but useful. Generic ink) toner can be had for $15 and easily gets 1000 pages.

If you aint going ecotank, dont bother
Technically I'm on Ecotank Cannon since I've kept refilling the original cartridges for 8 years. Lol. I even bought generic clear "refillable" versions but never used them. The canons were so simple to refill, I never bothered.

Been wanting a new printer for the heck of it but my brother MFC J475DW that's older than my daughter just wont die. Been running it with compandsave ink right after oem ran out and print tests still going strong even after more than a year of online schooling during the pandemic.

In the past month I've replaced 6 ink jet printers with lasers. They don't make any money on the printers, only the overpriced cartridges. I've have many clients and friends that have yet to replace the initial laser cartridge after a year. It's worth the initial investment. You'll save so much more in the long run. For the most part, Ink cartridges last around 300-500 pages, laser cartridges last around 2000-5000 pages and they won't dry up if there printer sits in the closet for a year.
I print infrequently and had to buy ink cartridges almost every time I printed. A few years back I bought a Brother color laser printer and never bought cartridges again.I print so seldomly that the starter cartridges are still going strong. Take the above advice and stop throwing away your money on ink cartridges!

Peace
