The sound we hear is completely subjective and when you add the cost of that difference, it becomes exponentially more complicated.
The R line is Klipsch's entry level line, the RP is the next level up.
IMO most people would agree the RP line would sound better, if they listened to them side by side.
Having heard both my impression, the main difference is the bright/harshness of them.
IF you prefer the sound of Klipsch but find them slightly too bright, the 8000's may be worth the extra cost.
I would disagree that you can EQ the R line to sound like the RP line.
Reference will get your foot in the door, but they're not really a long term solution once you properly demo the next levels up.
RP line can be something you'll be content with for a longer time period without the itch to upgrade. Much less ear fatigue from longer listening sessions as well. The harsh highs are no joke in the standard Reference line.
I had Reference for a long time though and really enjoyed them until I learned and demoed other options. Ignorance is bliss.
The first generation RP-600M bookshelf (currently $349 in piano black on Amazon through Acoustic Sound Design, an authorized Klipsch dealer) would be a much better solution in this price range, IMO. Paired with an entry level 12" sub you can have a really decent 2 channel setup.

I really do like the look of the RP line, and the 8000s. However I haven't been able to see them in person.
