A couple years ago I played through TIE Fighter again and it was still a blast. I hooked up my joystick and it worked great. Other games like the Jedi Knight series have mods that help modernize the graphics and UI. They make the games look really good for being 20+ years old. I will say that the level design in the games sometimes feels pretty dated. It's not always very linear and clear where to go next like in modern FPS games. I sometimes consulted guides to speed it along.

I played through Republic Commando a year ago and with the appropriate mods, it was a fun experience. I believe the ones I used updated the graphics and helped improve the AI (since your squadmates are AI controlled).

I also replayed The Force Unleashed games last year and they also hold up pretty well for an over-the-top Jedi destroys everything experience. The one thing I didn't like was how the second one introduces a stutter to the combat and it feels jarring after the smooth combat of modern games like God of War. At first I thought my game itself was lagging, but it's just how the combat was designed.

Basically for any of the games, check into mods because the mod communities out there have done some great stuff with modernizing the graphics and UIs without really altering the gameplay.

Huh, might have to jump in on this or just get the $2.49 copy of X-Wing Alliance to use with the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade [xwaupgrade.com] and TIE Fighter: Total Conversion [moddb.com] fan remakes that requires an install of it. They are adding VR support which could be pretty rad way to replay these oldies plus all the other enhancements. It was on my "waiting for a fire sale" list, and this might count!

Thanks for the post, OP!

I loved a lot of these titles back in the day— X-wing, Tie Fighter, Dark Forces, Etc. How do they hold up today? Still fun? Or just for nostalgia purposes?

Yeah you don't have to worry. Indiegala is a legit site. They get their keys from the developers.

I'm looking for run & gun arcade type Star Wars games for my pc/mame arcade machine. Graphics quality isn't an issue as I want the retro/nostalgia style graphics. I have a few of the titles from each of the Classic and the COLLECTION listed above so I don't want to spend $10 for 3 games or $25 for 5 games I don't own. I don't have Rebel Assault 1&2 or Rogue Squadron 3D which seem to fit the run & gun style after watching some videos. Long haul/quest/story line games like Tie Fighter or X-Wing Special Editions are not. Any suggestions on "tap start, watch instructions, and shoot things" style games in the list that would be subjectively good? I not only have arcade joysticks, but the Star Wars Arcade yoke as well as a HOTAS 4, so I've got controls covered.

Thank you so much! This is awesome, I didn't realize there was a community modding these games. Sounds fun, even if just for a nostalgia playthrough.

PS: was there a favorite space sim on your last playthrough? Deciding between x-wing, tie fighter, x-wing vs tie fighter, alliance, etc. Thanks!

I just got Star Wars Galactic battlegrounds saga a few weeks ago and let me tell you, if you're a fan of AoE 2 it's definitely a must. It's a really well made reskin of AoE2 with developed factions(I think somewhere around 8) that seem fairly balanced. The servers are non existent but that's not unfathomable for a game that's over 20 years old. The game can be hosted on game ranger but I haven't personally attempted it. Some of the steam reviews and discussions have mentioned hardware compatibility issues with the game, one of my buddies had a few initial crashes and I believe I had one myself over 10hrs. I normally don't comment on here but as a big RTS fan, especially games like AoE2 and Warcraft 3, I would've loved to have learned about this game years ago.
My specs:
MSI laptop
i7-9750H
2070 mobile
16gb DDR4
stored on HDD

Man, I broke two fighter sticks playing X-Wing back in the day. The quality and passion of game design and production.

Wow, I really wanted to buy this but checked kinguin first. They had the classic collection for $3.65 so I grabbed it there instead.

I used to love all of these games. Thanks for reminding us OP!

For some reason, I'm thinking there are more X-Wing Alliance mods.
