Recently bought a new 6800xt for $520. 7900xt is 30% faster than 6800xt. So the 7900xt should cost $700

So I'm new to PC hardware and trying to get a build going in the next coming months.

Why are there different companies that make the same GPUs? I see ASUS, MSI, ASrock, etc., selling the same 4080 or 7900. What do they do that warrants one being $200 more than the other? And how do you pick which brand to go with?

You'd think GPUs were sold like CPUs in just a generic case.

In the world of video cards nowadays, Nvidia and AMD basically sell their "design specs" for each GPU configuration, but it is then up to the OEM to produce and sell their card. Each OEM can vary in build quality, or even sometimes overclocking the original design spec from Nvidia/AMD.

For nvidia I would go with msi, evga, gigabyte, asus.
for amd I would go powercolor, sapphire..

that being said if the warranty is decent and company reviews are solid go with whatever

So the one I'm looking at is the 6950 at Microcenter.

https://www.microcenter.com/produ...ab-reviews

This one doesn't have a brand in front of it at all. It just says AMD.

That's a reference card made by amd themselves. Nothing wrong with it

Thinking of upgrading from my base 2080, between a 7900XT or 4070Ti which would be the play at msrp if I don't plan on upgrading for the next 3-4yrs? (3440x1440)

So I can just pick that one up instead of looking at the others? It's the cheapest option and I'm no pro game but a high-end, last-gen GPU at that price is what I was recommended and it will be in my budget.

7900xt is probably the better play with it's vram unless you really like raytracing

Go with the 7900 XT, the extra video RAM will pay dividends in the up coming years.

Any PC hardware post on SD is toxic, but GPU posts are straight cancer.
