Waiting for the AM5 version should be out in a month or less, and then these will all fall in price anyways

But then you'd have to also purchase a new motherboard and DDR5 RAM.

If you're building a new PC then AM5 3D is the way to go. If you're on AM4 currently then this is the best CPU to get for gaming and this won't change since no new AM4 chips will be made.

Yes, the 5800x3d is very different from the 5800x. They literally shave the silicon substrate of the chip down to fit more lvl3 cache on the chip. That greatly improves the processors abilities when gaming. Between the 2 the x3d chip is better. The only thing to be aware of is that because of the stacked cache, you can't overclock it.
Some games see benefits. MS Flight Sim eg. sees huge gains.

This is a pretty good deal if you like the game. I played COH2 for 500+ hours and was planning to get COH3, but was on the fence due to the game being in a rather unpolished state, Holding off on this one as well, as I would at least like to see the 7000 series X3D in action first

Yup, in the same situation as you. But, 5800X is already good enough. Will up grade when it hit $200.
I don't understand this thinking. When this hits $200, the 5800x will be worth $100. Buy for 300 now and sell your 5800x for 200 now. Your net will be the same regardless of waiting, except for extreme case sales

This chip smokes VR too. Anything where frametime and latency matter. Flight Sims, Racing Sims and especially VR.

It looks like it is actually $300 at microcenter for those lucky individuals with a Micro Center around:

Ryzen 5 5500 cpu mark score 19,540 $97

Ryzen 7 5800X3D cpu mark score 27,870 $309

So, it looks like you get a 42% increase in performance for a little more than triple the price,
plus power use increases by over 60%.

Too bad we can't just put 3 of the Ryzen 5 5500 processors on a motherboard instead!

For gaming yes...the extra cache makes a HUGE difference in games. Some games have a drastic improvement..Sim games, like MS flight or Racing Sims see very huge gains because of the exra cache. If you do mostly core intensive work with little gaming, i'd probably say it's not worth it because that performance will hurt due to the lower core count and slower clock speeds

You'll have to factor out your upgrade path..
$300 for this chip is still a decent deal but with the new gen just around the corner, like tomorrow, i'd probably say to wait a bit as the prices for this one will end up going even less. I haven't seen the reviews yet but if they show leaps in performance i'd say wait it out..if they don't show much than go for it. The nice thing about am4 chip like this one is yoiu don't need to ugprade your ram or motherboard to get really good gaming performance that's on par with current am5 chips..

In some games yes, but not all games. However, compiling code, zipping files, streaming, etc this loses to the 5900x always.

I rather have the 5900x. I've seen a bunch of benchmarks and the meager performance in few games is not worth it.

I have a 3900x and waiting for the 5900x for 280 or this one for 250.

The only benefit is if you play those few games or if you play at 1080p. On high resolution 2k or above, you'll be limited by the GPU and not the cpu

Yeah i looked at some quick benchmarks and it doesnt seem to be worth it. I'll just wait for the nextgen CPU after 7000 series

7800x3d, 7900x3d and 7950x3d for AM5 comes out in 2 days.
The 7950X3D looks like it has at most a 10% edge on the 5800X3D for more than double the price. Gamers Nexus did some benchmarks. LOL pass.

I'm going from a 3700X to a 5800X3D so it's a meaningful upgrade. The new 3D chips barely perform better. I'll wait like two more gens to upgrade again. Or maybe not at all since I game at 1440P

Finally someone mentions resolution.. All these comments saying this is the best gaming cpu fail to mention it's the best gaming cpu at 1080P! Any higher resolution than that and there is little to no performance improvement. Basically, if you already have a 5800x or above and play at a resolution above 1080p (pretty much everyone) this is not worth it. I know because I wanted to sell my 5800x for it as well and after looking into it, that's what I found.

I thought that AMD had announced a significant price reduction on processors to take place around the end of Feb or early March. Does anyone know it this is part of that price reduction?
