Synology with Intel Celeron CPUs support hardware accelerated transcoding. They can transcode 1080p Blu-ray rips. They will struggle to transcode and tonemap 4K HDR Blu-ray rips. They will fail miserably if subtitle burning is required when transcoding. Subtitle burning uses the CPU, even if using hardware accelerated transcoding. The Celeron CPUs simply are not strong enough.
If you need to transcode 4K HDR media or multiple 1080p streams, consider using the NAS for storage and running Plex Media Server on a PC running Windows or Linux. The PC should have a Nvidia GPU (1050 or better) or Intel QuickSync graphics in the CPU (8th Gen CPU or newer). Plex does not support hardware accelerated transcoding with AMD GPUs or on ARM based systems.

I tend to lean towards CMR being a paranoid type but I've seen comments from lots of people online perfectly happy with their SMR drive

I just bought this one. My dad asked me if he could store his backups on my unraid server, bought this for him to put in it. Looks like a decent drive.
Maybe rough handling during shipment since I got them all together or a bad batch.
I have other cheap consumer grade Seagate 8TBs SMR... that keep running.
