In Vietnam, there is Nha Trang and Da Nang, both are resort towns with major brand hotels, as well as lesser known brands. First world amenities at third world prices.

I know this is a very first world problem here, but just came back from Maldives 2 weeks ago. We stayed in an over water villa (at the W), and also had an opportunity to stay at a beach from villa as well. Having tried both, I think this really comes down to whether you want convenience or something scenic. Over water villa is cool and all, but you spend a lot of time walking back and forth to the main island area and beaches. The beach front villa gives you the convenience of walking out your door and right onto the beach. No need to lug around your gear - the beach is right there. Also, food and other amenities are usually on the main island so less walking to those as well.

$500pp/night isn't that bad, especially when it's all inclusive. On these islands, it doesn't take much to rack up a a $2-300 bill on just dinner alone without alcohol. You can't just walk down to Mc Donald's and grab a Big Mac when you're feeling hungry.

The Maldives definitely is one of the bucket list places for most people, and for good reason. The atolls there are spectacular, and the snorkeling and diving are second to none. Most of these resorts will likely not pack everyone in like sardines, so it'll still feel intimate and not crowded even at full capacity (aka: Waikiki as a comparison)

$500/day per person seems crazy high to me. That's probably $1000/day for most people.

There are just SO MANY alternatives that come in closer to half this cost or less.

EDIT: Lots of people have replied already to disagree. So I request that you don't also. Thanks.

Where? Who would spend $4000 to go someplace they never heard of?

The reef in many islands in Maldives is taking a beating perhaps due to pollution and environmental changes. I've been to Maldives 3 times in last few years, but each time the snorkeling gets a bit less and less diverse. I saw a few less intelligent or less informed folks walking over the reef during low tides last year, yelling at them does not change the result. On the other hand, Hawaii shoreline seems to recovering from conservation efforts. Maldives is indeed quite inconvenient from US origin travel perspective. Bali might be a great place for honeymooners (a whole bunch Koreans go there for destination weddings apparently)— luxury can be enjoyed at least a third of prices compared to Maldives, with of course more diversity.

They've been saying this for 40+ years now, yet there it still is.
I'd say it's this mindset that is expediting it. For me, nothing is more frustrating than brushing this aside when it's going to accelerate at an alarming rate in our lifetime.

The world is getting warmer. There is no argument there. Sea levels are rising. Many tiny islands have lost much of their land (and some have been submerged entirely.)

This is not political, this is not me arguing. This is just what has happened and is happening.

Bali....Vietnam
Bora bora is nice but way overpriced, there are many other islands in that area that arent as touristy or overpriced.

Check out el nido in Phillipines. These overpriced spots like Maldives and Bora Bora aren't any better as far as beauty and are much more crowded. The service is exquisite but in places like El Nido you can literally rent private islands for cheap. The island hopping is by far better and the water temp is amazing. You'll get far more for your money out there but the service probably won't be as nice.
How do you rent a private island in Philippines?

I'd remind everyone that China is eyeing Taiwan with potential for war, so the Maldives may be a crazy place to visit during this time. Buy travel insurance that allows you to cancel and get your money back for ANY reason.

Palawan, in general, is a great area to go in the Philippines. El Nido is probably the best part though.

Don't worry, the US will have Taiwans back ….. ok, I had a hard time typing that with a straight face. Maybe in the future if China hasn't already bought out all the Us politicians.

If this includes the domestic airfare from MLE, this is totally worth it.

That is an absurd statement and nothing to do with general advice about plopping down $3k+ by purchasing insurance.

Even if the US defends Taiwan, the Department of State that runs travel guidelines for US citizens would certainly tell Americabs to avoid this area of the world.
