Have had this laptop for a good bit now and love it. The 6700m and 5800h can handle the vast majority of games I throw at it but the best part is how light and thin it is. I don't use this as my daily gaming machine (desktop with a 3700x and rtx3080) so this is mainly a travel gaming machine. I do like how they went minimalistic on the looks of it, so it looks very sleek and like a normal professional laptop and doesn't scream RGB LOOK AT ME I AM A GAMING MACHINE

I will say a major downside to this computer is upgradability. Not to say you can't upgrade things like RAM and add additional nvme storage, but the motherboard is mounted upside down (part of the cooling configuration) so you have to fully remove the motherboard to upgrade which is more challenging

In-between a 3060 and a 3070. It is hard to compare to Nvidia because 3060 and 3070 don't mean anything when they can cap the tdp on them which knee caps the gpu

for example the 3060 can have 60,65,70,80,85,90,95,100,105,110 and 115w caps which effects how that device will function. 3070 laptops are also all over the place with some at 85 watts (Acer nitro 5), 90, 95, 100,105,110,115,125,130, 140 and apparently some 145watt units. comparing a 90 watt and a 140 watt 3070 would give you vastly different results, now trying to compare that to an AMD 6700m and... well .. you get the picture

One of the ways they managed the weight and more efficient cooling is that the entire body of the laptop is aluminum, not plastic. So the entire laptop body helps dissipate the heat. I haven't used this for serious amounts of time for gaming so not sure what the thermal throttling looks like but the benefit of it being an AMD advantage machine (AMD gpu and cpu) is the CPU and GPU are constantly adjusting their tdp relative to each other, so the CPU can throttle down if a game isn't CPU heavy and the tdp headroom can go to the gpu. They call this smartshift technology.

This laptop fulfilled 3 things I needed in a new "gaming laptop". minimalistic appearance so can still be used as a professional laptop in an office setting easily. thin and light... and full size keyboard, not the stupid small keyboard with the useless (to me) number pad on the right side.

Can you easily dock this to a desktop monitor to have a dual screen setup if needed?

Yes. It has both an HDMI port and USB-C with display out. I use a USB C hub on right side USB C port that breaks out to HDMI, 4 USB 3.0 ports and ethernet. Only thing this wont do is charge over USB (which most gaming laptops cant because of the wattage requirements).

As I said in another post the USB C and HDMI are both linked to the dGPU so you can game and get full performance to a monitor.

Have you had any issues with the hinges? Looks like there were several 1 and 2 star reviews saying that the hinges are very weak and can snap

Nope my hinges appear to be perfect. Idk how they would snap when the entire computer is aluminum and not plastic. Had issues with dell laptops and hinges pulling out of the plastic

Thanks to everyone who's commented. Finally decided to bite the bullet and buy. Been shopping around for a gaming laptop for awhile now and just nearly bought the Dell G16 but this seems like a better deal, and cheaper!!

Correct me if wrong, but compared to the G16: Slower processor (but still nearly latest gen), better GPU (esp appealing is 10gb VRAM), and sleeker/maybe better build quality given aluminum case.

Same boat as shinseiryuu. This has been a journey, and the wait is finally over. I almost landed on an Asus Vivobook 16, but on a cutthroat budget I felt like I was looking for a lot more than I should have.

This one's a bit more than I wanted to spend, but the quality overall looks worth the extra. Checks all the boxes plus a few I hadn't figured likely (metal body? yes!). I felt like I'd be a fool to pass on this.

If you have your power profile set to use the dGPU when plugged in (high performance mode I believe) then the fans will kick on anytime you do anything that uses the dGPU to keep it nice and cool. Secondary display bypasses the iGPU and connects directly to the dGPU (both USB c and HDMI). This laptop doesn't have a mux switch
Nope. No matter which profile you choose, the fans will kick in when you plug in power. I even tried disabling dGPU to test that but the fans kick in no matter what. I agree with the secondary display part.

Strange mine doesn't seem to do that. Have you updated the bios?

Just a heads up. It looks like this is a slightly more challenging laptop for upgrades. Video I just watched showed removing the bottom panel, then you have to remove and flip the board to get to the memory and SSD. Not a big deal if you are used to this stuff, but beyond the "one a panel and pop the new memory in" upgrade. I'm upgrading memory and SSD. Not intimidated by this, but will need a bit more time.

The laptop is if I'm not mistaken a by product of the MSI GS65 series. I bought one back in 2017 and have it til this day. It is somewhat of a hassle to upgrade because the motherboard is reversed with the ram and sd slots on the opposite side of the bottom with cpu access being barred by fans in case you want to replace the thermal paste. I've gotten used to it so there's that but just a heads up for those who don't know. Also if it is like the G665 beware. Mines has been suffering from power port burn out with the laptop constantly needing to have it resoldered if I so much as turn on one taxing game. Probably poor management of the laptop fan settings and gaming conditions on my part but take note.

Which version of BIOS are you on? I am using 1.06 but I saw there is 1.08 released. Going to flash that version.

Been on 1.08 for a few months (they released it in December of last year but for some reason their website keeps changing the date. If you look at the text file in the bios zip you will see the build date

The price is right for this one. I got this for $1099 last year. My only gripe is the fans kicking on while charging or using secondary display doing light tasks.
Yeah, it's the one thing keeping me from picking this up. Apparently fan noise is a major issue with this laptop, especially while doing any gaming.

if you are gaming then you should not be concerned about fan noise while gaming IMO
