Yeah, it sure seems like we're getting very close to a consumer discretionary spending inflection point. You can only say "wait a minute, come on" so many times, before the wallet just finally closes. I think a lot of people will soon start closing their wallets. These shrinkflation type "deals" might motivate a couple people that absolutely need some bits, and a couple sockets to open their wallets, but for anyone else this is not a deal for $62.

Don't confuse MSRP with competitive market pricing. From Amazon:
The List Price is the suggested retail price of a new product as provided by a manufacturer, supplier, or seller. Except for books, Amazon will display a List Price if the product was purchased by customers on Amazon or offered by other retailers at or above the List Price in at least the past 90 days. List prices may not necessarily reflect the product's prevailing market price.
You're not paying the crossed out prices anyways, just ignore them.

But the MSRP on the 168-pc kit is $145 and on the 142pc kit is $107. So I'm not sure this is an MSRP thing.

Leave the "MSRP inflation" aside for a minute. That's just barely $62 worth of mechanics tools if that, in my opinion. The parts count is inflated by the farcical huge number of hex keys in this set, 28 of them.
If you want to work on cars or motorcycles, this is not a good kit. Only SAE sizes and only 12pt sockets. For modern stuff you want metric and 6pt. I am surprised they labeled this as a "mechanics" kit
edit: i have been corrected, just a poorly formatted listing. If you're willing to dig, you'll find that all sockets are 6pt (not sure why the listing has a picture of a 12pt) and there is a mix of sae and metric. Totally absent from the pictures is the large, blow molded case that contains all the pieces and the smaller yellow case.

Update: small yellow case goes inside the bigger one. Not sure what it holds though.

"Reduced slippage with Knurled rings"
I'm not sure how that help get multiple sockets into the box, but they shouldn't be slipping around once they are in there!
