XS open box at 429 is not that great. I would bite at 300 considering the build quality on these is very bad. I had them and returned them because they felt very flimsy and easy to break. They did sound amazing though..
I know that there have been a few naysayers on the ef400, like Goldensound on yt... but in my personal experience it's a true taste of totl audio at a price that can't be matched for the sound.
I would also go as far as to say that, unless you need a preamp for desktop speakers (mine are powered so it doesn't matter in my use case), there probably isn't a better single solution for desktop audio. You can't get warmer without losing resolution or moving to tubes. Plays really well with everything I've thrown at it personally. Insane sense of depth, control, more power than you need for 90% of headphones out there.
I'm not a huge fan of the XS (although I disagree with the build quality complaints.. the beyer-style headband is rock solid and heavier than the arya and sundara bands... it just has more "wobble" at the yokes for rotation purposes.. it's not a defect it's a feature that has been on literally every studio monitoring can from BD since ever)....
The amp on the other hand is worth a purchase... especially if you can get it under 500 (you're stealing it at that point)

The EF400 has been very well reviewed but some units (perhaps all) have a phase sync issue so I would recommend waiting for a likely revision.
