According to most reports M2 is 20% faster but it's disk access is 50% slower while the price is 33% more.

To get disk access on par with M1 you need to pay $200 to upgrade to 512gb ($799 or $699)

There's a slow SSD controversy on the M2 base models. The M1 base models have 2 SSDs while the M2 base models have only 1 SSD so there can be data bottlenecks.

This is true. I have an M1 Mac Mini and an M1 MacBook Air. The Mini is hooked up to three monitors: one via the built-in HDMI port, one via a USB-C to HDMI adapter, and one via a DisplayLink adapter. The first two outputs are native (Apple supported) solutions, but the DisplayLink is a workaround that requires additional software from Synaptics:

I believe the new M2 Pro chips can support more external displays now:

Apple changed the game with the M1, super fast, low power consumption etc.

When I did build a few Hackintoshes, I realized it really wasn't worth the time/hassle. Things just stop working randomly, have to do weird updates all the time. It's fun for a hobby, but considering a MacBook air is $799 these days, it's not worth my time to screw around with a computer that randomly works.
I had this same experience. It's been a while, but when one minor OS update crashes your system you get wary of doing even minor updates going forward. That's no way to live.

Tomorrow staples will have visa loaded card for sale without process fee. Buy $500 with chase ink card to get 5% cash back, then use it buy apple gift card in best buy to get $15 x 5 best buy egift card, then buy the $499 M2 from apple. You save $100. Same as this M1 if you are lucky to find one in store.

So people don't want to do hackintoshes anymore?
With the Apple Silicon being the way of the future, it will be pretty crap to even get it working soon.

M2 mac mini is $500, any reason to go for this one over that?
I guess if you just want the cheapest Mac, 400 is an insane deal

No, but it's pretty easy to call the store and tell them you have an item number and you want to see if they show stock before driving to the store. That's quick and easy for them to look up - nicest call they'll get all day.

Yes, call ahead and make sure there's more than 1 in stock. They count the display as store inventory. Unfortunately they can't hold the item for you though.

I would usually argue to go with the M2. But for $100 in price difference I think it's worth it if I was getting it for my kid to replace say their raspberry pi. The pi has gotten so expensive to make any "cheap educational" sense. But that's just me.
