According to most reports M2 is 20% faster but it's disk access is 50% slower while the price is 33% more.

To get disk access on par with M1 you need to pay $200 to upgrade to 512gb ($799 or $699)

Recent mac's are not upgradeable in either ram or sdd unfortunately.

There's a slow SSD controversy on the M2 base models. The M1 base models have 2 SSDs while the M2 base models have only 1 SSD so there can be data bottlenecks.

Got one from my local store. Quite a few left 27407.

I do a lot of large file transfers. M1 dual-chip is 60% faster than M2 single-chip.
Please can you post the file transfer speeds you see on the M1? iStat Menus will give you a good idea of overall speeds. I'd like to see if it even nears 800MB/s, much less 1500MB/s or 3000MB/s.

What a lucky guy! Faster computer than most folks have (have you seen the single core speeds on these?), AND from a nice guy like you! Smilie

Am I allowed to share my experience having worked from home for over a year as a front end webdev on this computer? I've been informed by other posters that this shouldn't be possible on this machine.

Best $399.97 computer ever.

fun fact - Costco won't sell you the display units. those have to go back to Apple - I'm sure they end up in the refurb store. I tried to get the display in my store for $299.

M2 mac mini is $500, any reason to go for this one over that?
Each mac is supported for X numbers of years.

If M2 is supported for. X number of years.
then
M1 is supported for X -1 number of years.

This should help in making the decision...

my biggest peeve with these computers is the fixed 8GB RAM, which is 2023 should be against the law. My 2013 iMac came with 8GB.. just the 2012 iMac before that. But apple thinks even after putting 8GB standard in Macs for the past 11 years... there is no need for additional memory.

M1 average speed is 2300 to 2600 mb/s

M2 average 1200 to 1400 mb/s

Big difference.

That is for large files, not how most people use a small drive computer. The speed difference running the os, loading programs and viewing photos is minimal. HOWEVER, 8GB is much much more limiting.

Percentage wise, sure, but in reality - no. The SSD is only 256 Gb to start with, so any file size being transferred to the drive will be of a limited size. Additionally, how much time is actually saved in a workflow by doubling that speed? It's really a nonfactor. Anyone doing "serious" professional work isn't using a base level Mac Mini.

I'm thinking of buying this to use solely as a Plex server. I have a large desktop running Linux that currently serves this purpose in addition to other tasks, but I'd love to get Plex off of it so I can use it for other reasons.
I've never owned a Mac device.
Reading some of the back and forth in this thread, it makes me think I shouldn't get this M1 device. If it won't be supported in a few years or they throttle the speed, I'd be disappointed, as I want something that draws little power and I can just leave it on to run for months/years on end with little to no fuss.
I'm still trying to determine whether this would be a good purchase for me.

This is exactly what this machine is good for to be used as a PLEX server. It's 2 1/2 years old so it will be supported for 4.5 to 5 more years likely - if thats long enough for you. It won't become a brick then, it just won't be able to run the latest operating system and won't get full security updates. The lack of RAM won't matter as a PLEX server.

Great. Thanks. Sounds like I could get 6 to 8 years out of it as a Plex server. If that is the case, I could look back 6-8 years from now and know that it was a sound purchase. I can live with that.

Truth! Honestly, I think the best advice would be to get this Mini. I have a soft spot for the old cheese grater Mac Pros but they are getting very long in the tooth at this point and even with the incredible effort being expended to keep them running the newest software there are still things you need to troubleshoot, work around, etc. They still have their uses and are great if you need to add a ton of storage or need a mega GPU for FCP or something. But for almost everyone else, you can't go wrong with an M1 mini--especially at this price.
Went down the rabbit hole and installed Monterery over the weekend. So far so good and it satisfied my upgrade itch! Thanks again.
