I service them myself and if you take care of them the can last 15-20 years. For the washer (Im speaking LG) there is a port on the front to clear out debris. Do that once a month (or two). Also every week or two run a cleaning cycle (tub clean). If you don't the spider will degrade and at that point you throw it away. Keep the debris out of the rubber area so it drains properly. After some years (mine lasted 10) you will need to replace the drain pump. $35 and twenty min. Also had to do the shocks after 10 years ($80).
For the dryer its more complicated because you need to open it up. The big killer is lint and I replace the rollers every 5 years. The shocks you will need to do every 10 years or so in the washer. You could have a handyman do it for under $200.
Mechanically the are not really complicated unless you get steam and then it steps it up, and will greatly increase parts death/maint because they are high temp/pressure devices. My advice, stay away from steam. I have had to tell many friend the bad news.
The issue w/ these devices is that after maybe 5 years LG an others stop making the control panels (or you cant get them) so if these die you need to throw out the entire thing. Not sure warranty to 10 years+ covers that but you may be able to source one second hand.
Outside of that if you properly maintain them they should last well longer than the 8-10 years they say. Mine just popped up on 15 years. I have spend maybe $200 in parts, so I can see if you are not into opening up stuff it may be better after 10 years to change it out.

Vibration can be an issue with this washer depending on where in your house it is located.
