A shorter smaller version of Gloomhaven that is also highly rated. Normally $49.99.

Okay - so rewind back the last few years and check out how many times "Gloomhaven" made front page on Slickdeals at a price of $85-90. I bought my copy in November of 2020, and holy crapola that big old box was intimidating. We always meant to get around to playing it, but it is a somewhat complicated game. The box sat in our gaming cabinets... Maybe the same thing happened to you, my fellow Slickdealer?

Fast forward to recent times - About 2 months ago, I started looking into GH (Gloomhaven) again and how to play. Well guess what? Jaws of the Lion (JOTL) is NOT simply a smaller version of GH. JOTL is an ON RAMP to Gloomhaven. It has 5 introduction scenarios that each add a new layer of play, and bring you up to speed in a way that makes sense, is fun, and you are getting wayyyy more fun out of this box than the price tag would indicate. All of the sudden - you're playing GH. My kids (ages 16 and 22) and I are now about to finish the JOTL campaign and now we are so stoked that we can finally break out that big ol' intimidating GH box next and actually PLAY the OG game! I'm now a fan, and although JOTL has seen a price point as low as $20, I would still argue that $25 is a fricking steal for how much gameplay is packed into this box. Plus, if you're on the fence about Gloomhaven you'll want to start with this anyway. Strong recommend <3

I hope this message helps someone else out that has a GH box just sitting on the shelf of shame like I did. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk! wave
Gloomhaven and its little brother JOTL are not RPG games -- they are puzzle games masquerading as RPGs. It is all about hand management and controlling the AI that runs the monsters. JOTL is much more forgiving than Gloomhaven in terms in correct plays of cards and incorrectly controlling the AI's movement, and therefore allows a bit more RPG play style (though this is strictly done according to players and has no elements that are taken from the rules). Lots of people get turned off by RPG games, that is why I am saying this. This is more akin to the feel that one has when working through a co-op chess puzzle -- except here with cards and all under a nice coat of fantasy (with some sci-fi elements).

This is a great price for the game -- there is a massive amount of things in the box and the storage solution that it provides is pretty good (though lots of baggies floating around on top of all the cards and cardboard). The setup is relatively quick. Can be played single-player (playing as 2 or more characters and controlling the AI). All four of the Character Classes are interesting and synergize very well with each other.

25 scenarios around 1.5-2 hours each. Worth the money at anything under $40.

I own Gloomhaven, JotL, and Frosthaven. Jaws of the Lion is by far our favorite of the 3 and our favorite board game. It's much easier to learn because of the intro missions. And its much easier to setup because of the booklet maps instead of the cardboard tile pieces. We have spent probably 30+ hours playing JotL, and it's been a great time. I've painted our set of characters, and invested in some 3rd party storage solutions ($40) and character trays (3d printed).

I highly recommend this game at any price point, including it's MSRP of $50.

Yeah, JotL is in many ways the superior game since setup is way quicker and shorter campaigns. I'd honestly only play Gloomhaven now on Steam because of the amount of time it saves. I was part of the Frosthaven KS even but canceled my pledge because it's just too much game for my enjoyment.

$25 just seems ridiculous for how in depth and nice this game is. Even if you printed out everything on your printer at home it would probably cost more than $25 in ink.

There is literally hours upon hours or gameplay, character progression, story line.

This just feels like robbery.

P.s. this game takes long to setup, it actually destroyed our game night because people became conflicted between wanting to play this and wait for the setup time

Same. I tried to play it, and the rules are just too numerous for me to engage with. If you have a team where everyone is engaged with the rules then I bet its better. But in my case i was the only one trying to remember the rules, and it was a disaster.

well let me tell you this, it gets a lot easier after scenario 7. for example for enemy movement just use your best guess. make some house rules that makes sense if you feel the game is unfair. a common one is I heal when I long rest based on level. bosses drop 2 coins. we get to choose an objective from 3 cards instead of 2 if we get a mega damage we can lose one card AND ignore any effects.

my promise is that it gets easier and more enjoyable as you play. go watch this series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCpQqrCiTDs
you can't really play without it. also google your questions and write down the answers in an FAQ (for some reason I tend to ask the same question multiple times)

Can anyone give me a rundown of all that is available for purchase for this set + Gloomhaven board game? I have been interesting in playing this and Gloomhaven for years now, but I haven't bit on buying due to how much there is out there.

Also, if I like playing this, would playing Gloomhaven be a no-brainer to play?

There is JotL (Gloomhaven Lite), Gloomhaven and the terrible and completely skippable Forgotten Circles expansion, and Frosthaven (Gloomhaven 2).

If you like JotL, you will probably like the original Gloomhaven but be aware of a few things:

-Setup is way more involved. Like, add 45 minutes. Get an alphabetized accordion organizer for the map tiles. The Gloomhaven Helper app alleviates a lot of the pain here and I would personally call it essential, but some people are weird about using an app with a board game.
-The rules are slightly heavier and the game can be laughably difficult on some of the scenarios. A couple of house rules (such as failing forward) make the entire game much more enjoyable.
-It's a significant time investment to make it through the campaign. The nice thing is, you don't need a consistent group of players to progress as the design allows for people to drop or be added as needed.

Imho Gloomhaven (after a few rules tweaks) is still the best dungeon crawler AND best legacy game on the market. At a super affordable price when compared to the average $400 kickstarter, it's well worth jumping in.
