Damn any time I've bothered looking at chase rewards it's junk like 10% off Panera....
If you wanted to use the crossover on the sub, instead of your AVR, you'd connect full range L/R cables from the preamp L/R out to the L/R in on the sub.
This isn't common (and hasn't been for a good long time now)- most folks will just want to run one cable from an LFE out on the amp to the LFE in on the sub and use the AVR to set the crossover to the sub.

Really basic answer:
First- do the sub crawl. Put the sub in your primary listening position, and have it play a constant test tone. Then, using an app on your phone that shows you the db level of sound, crawl around the perimeter of the room. Find the best spot to place the sub based on the highest detected db at a spot you could also reasonably place the thing.
Then place and connect the sub, set the gain to the halfway mark, and run audessy on your Denon. You want to insure the sub is set at less than -12db (because -12db is the max, which means you didn't get a useful measurement). If it reads -12db turn the gain down one notch then run it again. Repeat until it's less than -12db. Ideally you want to get it down to like -6db so you have some room to adjust it back up without maxing the system.
At that point play something you like with significant bass. dial the -6db back up some if it sounds better to you.
That's the simplest approach, and it'll get you pretty good for not much effort.
The other end of the scale is to get REW and a good microphone and learn how to use them. That'll take... longer.
My HSU vtf2 is lot more clean with its variable control. I can adjust it for music or slightly less clean but more powah for movies. For that reason i like hsu more than svs
I'm interested in doing just that. Could you send a few urls to get me started? Thanks!
Or search Marty Sub by GSG to buy a flat pack if you find the process of designing and cutting your own box to be too daunting.
Have fun!

But seriously buy one now and save up to buy one more down the road.
